So it seems as if Harry, unlike Arsene, would not worry about signing in January - he'd get over Remy's commitment issues and the length of time it would take him to settle into PL football.

No thanks Remy would be a toned down version of gervinho. The way diaby is compared to vieira is how remy is to henry, nothing but a cheap imitation.

but he'd be worse than van persie. the long-term trend in our team is to lose henry, bergkamp, pires, fabregas, van persie and replace with walcott, gervinho, wilshere, arshavin and.. remy? that's got uefa cup written all over it, if you ask me.

i simply refuse to have my expectations lowered given the financial power of this club. we should be looking at no less than the very best players at their position in the world.

too many players have been brought based on wenger predicting their potential and then getting it wrong, we should be buying players who are proven and will improve the areas we are weak in like a goalscorer or a midfielder who can run the midfield. At the moment wenger is like his players not putting the effort in. And i would accept results that dont go our way but i wont accept a lazy effort by the manager at doing his job.

But Sam, Wenger doesn't operate like that.
He has an ideal about how football should be played and the type of player that should play it, if events on the pitch or reality intrude, well then it's they who are wrong not him and its someone elses fault like the ref or the fixtures or the football financial system.

Wenger has always bought on potential though and never star players. All our great ones under Wenger were yet to fulfill their potential when we bought them, or we were able to get them below market value. Henry, Pires, Ljungberg, Vieira, Campbell, Toure, Gilberto, Cesc. All of them fall in either of those categories.

Yeah but none of them were teenagers when we got them except cesc, who incidently started this whole youth/potential crap and has given us these trophy barren years.

I merely pointed out that all our greats pretty much fall into that category. Has nothing to do with age.

Yeah ok what i meant was unproven players who could potentially make it as we have now, in walcott, ramsey, jenkinson, miquel etc whilst the players you mentioned werent based on potential bar vieira and toure maybe ljungberg. most of them had proven records.

Not to mention if your talking about potential it has everything to do with age.

I'm getting desperate. This Tevez to Milan saga is dragging on. Usmanov should take pity on Kroenke and make a donation in the form of 25m pound Tevez. It will at least make this weekend's game interesting.

i dont mind buying potential, but they'd better be potentially brilliant players, not potentially average players like denilson, vela, bendtner, eboue, chamakh, etc, and we should be playing them when they're ready, not sacrificing seasons in order to quicken their development.

He will only join them after afcon though? Looks like a decent buy if it goes through, havent seen him play but he already has 9 goals from 15 games. Since he is also Senegalese they could be signing him to keep Demba Ba happy, win-win situation. I get the feeling if we do intend on signing anyone it will be a last minute panic buy. Sigh....

From the little I know of Cisse, I can't see him and Ba being a well suited partnership. Both too similar to one another. Maybe it's a sign that Newcastle expect to lose Ba either this month or, more likely, in the summer. If the £5M clause is accurate, what chance do they have of keeping him if Spurs or Chelsea come in for him having finished in the top 4?

There are also reports that PSG have a agreed a deal with City for Tevez. And, as posted in the Eden Hazard thread, a lot of different sources are claiming that a deal to Chelsea is nearing completion for around €28M.
