Cook gone first ball. Didn't get anywhere near it. Australia won by 350 odd runs in the first test, around 200 in the second and looking at around 300 runs here. Unbelievable.

Refreshing bit of fight from some of the batsmen to take it into the 5th day. Trouble being this is really the last partnership so it could be over very quickly in the morning. Impressive stuff from Stokes showing how to take the game to them. Some senior players should have done that a bit more in this series. Be really nice if he could make it to 100. That's really the way I wanted to see Bairstow lay in the previous series but he could never really work out whether he wanted to be a Cook/Trott or a Pietersen type and never did enough as either.

Just as you started to worry I started to almost feel hope! What a special innings this is from Stokes in his 2nd test in this situation and on that pitch. Needed 1 senior player to do the same and we'd have got out of this. Will surely be done in the next session.

It's pretty amazing how one sided this has been. The poor start by England wasn't completely unexpected but they just haven't been able to turn it around and make it competetive. The experienced players have been very disappointing and big questions need to be asked about Cook's captaincy and performance. I think the seeds for this were sewn in the last series as Australia were obviously improving while England's average performance was papered over by some good individual performances and favourable conditions. No doubt Australia deserve the urn and England now have to show (Stokes aside - great innings and looks a real prospect) that they still have some hunger and fight.

Knew it would be a much tougher series but didn't expect it to be such a thrashing. Going to take some sort of miracle or extreme weather for this not to end up 5-0. As I said before the worst thing for me is that the memories of the home series are now gone and I'll personally never be able to look back on it with any joy as I do with 2005, 2009 and 2010/11 which are all in my top 5 sporting memories.

Anyway, glad my brother and I decided not to pay out for the Boxing Day test trip in the end!

Really didn't see any of this happening. It's easy to say England were poor but Australia upped their game significantly. To my credit, the one thing I did rightly predict was a Mitchell Johnson rivival. He had been rapid in the couple of months before the Ashes. Disappointing from the batsmen and Anderson though.

Ben Stokes, one to watch out for. Don't think much of his gentle half-volley outswingers but he seems a very stylish batsman.

True, I was wrong on Stokes in saying we needed a batsman at 6. From what I've seen of him in the ODIs (admittedly I don't get any coverage of county cricket here), I didn't think he was up to it so happy to be proved wrong. Ian Chappell in the commentary keeps saying if you're in the side as an all rounder you need to either be good enough to bat in the top 6 just as a genuine batsman or good enough to be one of the 4 frontline bowlers. No point having someone who is not quite good enough at either, like Chris Woakes I guess. I had the impression Stokes was more a bowling all rounder so had concerns about him batting so high up but I guess I got that completely around the wrong way! Liked his attitude in not being afraid to dish out a few words in response to them and not being phased by any of what they gave him. Seemed to enjoy it. Wonder what odds you could have got on Stokes being England's first century maker before the series!

And to think Johnson probably wouldn't have played if all those other guys hadn't got injured!

Really liking the new look Detroit Pistons. Glad to see them start doing well again after some tough years. Drummond, Monroe and Smith is some frontline.

So Swann retired. His grandma says an unnamed Australian cricketer was "nasty" to him.
