Great final round of golf. So many players could have won and the two who lost the playoff all had their chances.

Onto the Ashes, Ballance has been dropped and replaced by Bairstow. Bell to move up to 3, Root to 4 and Bairstow in at 5. Think it's the right call. Ballance clearly had to go and Bairstow averages 100 this season. Also took his chance well when he got the final ODI against NZ with Buttler injured so he deserves another chance. Bell has not played his best stuff at 3 in the past but think he's probably the best option. 112 tests and playing his 7th Ashes, he's the senior player in the middle order so has to be the one to take that responsibility. It also means we don't start with 3 left handers. We cannot be 40-3 again.

I'm considering putting some money on Quintana to win the Tour. The two remaining mountain stages are tough and Froome is bound to have a bad day sooner or later. While Quintana is notoriously strong in the third week of the Grand tours.

I’m not a huge Froome fan but I’ve warmed to him over the last couple of years. I’d be happier if Thomas got third than if Froome won to be honest, but it’s obviously dependent on Froome’s form in the last few stages.

Froome wins the Tour but Quintana battered him up Alpe d'Huez. Nairo is the most naturally gifted climber of his generation, maybe the best since Pantani, and he looks bound to win the Tour himself someday. I think he'll win it already next year.

Was an incredible day. Bad start now with Bairstow gone already. He fails against Australia again although pretty unplayable ball to be fair. This partnership is key now. And Stokes gone as I type. Probably end up with a negligible lead now.

Awesome stuff. Was a little nervous when Starc and Nevill got those runs and was thinking back to Trent Bridge in 2005. But there were no dramas really. What a turnaround from Lord's. When they won the toss and batted I expected they'd be 300-1 at the close of play on day 1 again and we'd be out of it already. Instead at one point it looked like we might win inside 2 days. That's a slaughter.

Really happy for Finn. Out of the team and on the scrapheap for 2 years, told he was unselectable with the problems he had with his action. To come back like that and rip through their batsmen was amazing. Got Smith and Clarke in both innings. He could be a really player for us if he keeps up this level. A guy who is 6"8 and bowls 90mph should be a massive weapon. Great stuff from Bell too. Senior player had to step up to take the number 3 role and that's as good as he's batted since probably the 2013 Ashes.

I think both teams have shown themselves to be weak, mentally. Good front runners but amateurish when under the cosh. Still have the Aussies slight favourites at Trent Bridge as they are better at fighting back and Anderson is out.

I don't really agree they are mentally weak. I think both sides have much weaker batting lineups than they had over the last decade. Both rely heavily on one or two players. In this test Smith and Rogers didn't make any runs and as a result thru got rolled for 130 and effectively lost the game before tea on day one.

Even with Smith the middle order looks the weakest I've seen from an Australia team. Watson already gone, Voges looks out of his depth and kind of showing why he didn't get in the team until he was 35 and Marsh doesn't look up to it either. For us it's the top order although Bell looks to have improved things. The opening spot is a big problem though. Still haven't been able to replace Strauss. Lyth looks the latest in a long line of players who haven't been up to test level.

Maybe I am a cynic, but no surprise there for me. Can you imagine what would happen if someone actually looked into what it is like in football? No one in power seems to interested in opening that particular can of worms.

The vast majority of top level professional sportsmen are on PEDs, football is no exception.

I haven't watched them as closely as you so i'm happy to defer to your superior knowledge but how do you account for such fluctuating form from both teams?
If they were simply poor, they would never reach the heights England did in the first test and Australia, the second.
