I found the tactics we used in the first half interesting. Pushing both our fullbacks into midfield 8 positions. Pretty bold stuff by Arteta's standards. A couple of times it opened things up for us nicely. Could be something we see more against teams sitting deep and packing their third with players.

Especially when Saliba comes back, our defenders are so fast and strong that most of the time we don't need 4 players back.

Oh and that Odegaard free-kick was so good. Deserved a goal. He needs to take more of those.

Far cry from that Eze free-kick against Coventry...

Villa's line was quite good today I thought. We made a lot of runs in behind which is positive, but couldn't quite take advantage.

Solid performance but probably lacked a bit of cutting edge. Despite that missed some good chances, should have had a penalty, Villa should have had players sent off and were up against PGMOL again as usual with a dodgy ref. Villa didn't get a sniff all game.

Emery always has his team set up well and always up for it, we always come here and get a difficult game and today was no different. Got the points and now we move on.

Result is obviously the main thing but that was a really poor performance and highlights we still don't look like a great attacking team. Havertz just isn't a consistent goal scorer and he'll always miss as many as he scores. Tzolis had a real reality check today looked quite off it physically and his pace. Have to see how he goes over the opening 10 or so games but today was the kind of performance that highlights why he is a bit of a punt.

I thought we looked a bit shaky at times at the back as well and we lack much pace going forwards. We looked done at moments not going in for 50/50 too often.

Excellent 3 points. Performance was not great - let's be kind and say it's early in the season. They didn't muster a shot on target, although they did rattle one off the crossbar.

Mosquera was very good setting up the goal. Did so well to hang on and wait for the ball through to Eze.

McGinn is funny, as in you can laugh at him.

I wonder if Gyokeres might have come on if Mosquera hadn't got injured. Who knows.

Bad performance, but very good result. We looked slow and careless, which was surprising. Hard to blame individual players, when the whole team look like that. Pressing, for example, was non-existant.

Creativity was abysmal last night. Odegaard, Merino and Havertz managed zero chances created between them and just 2 shots.

Qwiss agree but the issue was in the mid-block. Villa didn't press our centre backs high so the midfield was congested, we didn't have anyone pass through the lines until Bruno came on.

Even the goal was basically created because Mosquera took control and played the initial pass through to Eze - that was missing for most of the game prior.

I'm gonna take it easy on Tzolis for now.. This was his first 'real' taste of life at the top for Arsenal. Most teams will do what Villa tried to do with us. Sit back, foul a lot, and generally try to pack in and not concede. He's got the tools in his locker, and he will realize the kinds of things he has to do quickly enough. He will realize he won't get the time he got against Coventry too often, and his play will become quicker.

3 points at Villa Park. Not something we always get... I'll take it, and a clean sheet (#2 out of 2) for the season. Oddly enough, only Hull has failed to concede a goal so far (other than us). We've conceded 1 shot on goal in 2 games.

Team definitely didn't look at our free flowing best, but with cunts like McGinn, Cash and the like, it was always going to be a slog.

USArsenal I think it's fair to give home some time, like I said I want to see 10 or so games to see where he settles. But this also was a potential risk as he hadn't overly impressed at his time at Norwich and he looks quite light physically and not much pace which is a challenge in the prem.

Havertz dropped down far too deep, contributing even further to the congestion. In games like that, he has to stay with the CBs and be a vertical threat.

Kel Varnsen yeah Odegaard dropping all the way back already causes issues. When Kai does it too then theres nothing beyond the block to play to anyway.
