It should not be your goal to win champions league. One game your fuck up your entire campaign. The league however is won by the best team. That’s the goal. Agree with those who say leave the league cup as much as possible to Dowman, MLS, Nwaneri and co

Ehhhhhhh i sorta disagree with this. It should be your goal to try to win the league AND to win the Champions league. Especially if we get some key reinforcements, we should absolutely go for the CL too. Its the one blemish on our record as a club, and we are widely considered to be the biggest club (along with the likes of Atl Madrid) to never win the CL. If cor nothing else, i'm fucking tired of hearing the bullshit moving goalposts online. I thought winning the league would tamp that down, but now everyone just says "but you'll never be champions of Europe" and it is starting to fucking grate on my nerves.

USArsenal I ignore that. Champions of Europe is a mixed bag. You get great PSG, Barca, Real, City teams. And then you have Chelsea and Porto fluking.

What I will say is that it is encouraging that Mikel has gotten us to QF, semi, final in successive seasons. If you tend to hang out in the final stages, you give yourself a good chance of winning. But the draw could be unfortunate and PSG takes us out in a QF. Do you call that a failure?

The goal posts will always shift. It’s what rivals/opposition do. When you win the Europa league, they will say you haven’t won the champions league. When you win the champions league, it’s but you’ve never done the treble. When you win the treble, you’ll be asked about the club World Cup.

I just shoot back with the invincible season, claiming it’s as big as, if not bigger than the Champions league.

The champions league is a nice to have and buffers your European pedigree, and we definitely should keep striving for it - knowing Mikel that’s likely a top priority for him now. But to go an entire season unbeaten? That’s a unique achievement. Likely to not happen again in modern day football for a very, very long time.

Well, yes.

It’s no shame to lose to a team like PSG, Bayern or Madrid.

But that’s where we want to be, and to win it we’ll need to beat these teams. We can’t write it off on the basis that there are stronger teams out there. Arteta’s job is to make us one of those strong teams now that can face up to them and consider it a failure if we don’t win, not a brushed off excuse that others are better.

We're also the team that has played the most CL matches without winning it, and by some margin too. Would be nice to get that monkey off our back. We are too big of a club not to have won it. Also, many people watch only CL matches, and even more only the later rounds, so also in terms of commercialisation etc it's huge.

But we keep on making semi finals and finals and eventually the chips will fall in our favour

Mirth exactly. It took City years of PL dominance before they cracked the CL. A lot of it is down to luck when the best sides face each other.

Qwiss I mean it's not just about the champions League like it or not arsenal are nobodys in terms of European football, are record is frankly pathetic for a club of our domestic stature and I do think it's something we need to change. Right now that means trying to deliver a champions League and we've had the luck with us to some extent the past two seasons and failed to get it through when other European sides haven't looked as good. That won't last forever.

Losing a CL knockout game -whether QF, SF, or final - is a sort of failure. We'd really like to win it.
A season where we win the PL again but don't win the CL is absolutely not a failure as a season.
I don't think taking strategic steps to prioritize the CL over the PL makes much sense.

Ask yourself which is the biggest feel good factor, winning the league or CL next year? It’s obviously the latter. Tuesday 19th of May can only be beaten by winning the CL. Let’s fucking go for it.

I think main target should be to see if we can retain the PL. Despite some late wobbles, we were the best team of last season, even if our level was probably higher in the couple before. I don't think as yet we are guaranteed to improve on last season's points tally and so should focus on that first. I am sure that with if league form is good enough, another chance at the Champions League trophy will be forthcoming.

DKGooner I also think there's something to be said for establishing some dominance in the league by winning in consecutive seasons. Changes the general perception of the club from being a one-off winners to be considered a serious force. Important when we're trying to recruit the Vini Jrs of this world.
