Unfortunately I don't think he'd be willing to come here as third choice. It could work out fine if he doesn't have to play, but it's very risky if Raya gets injured to have such an incapable second choice.

I’m having a very hard time shaking my doubts and skepticism about this signing.

I want my goalies to convey confidence and trust. Nothing I have ever seen suggests this guy can do that off field or with his defensive line.

For back up goalie(s) I would much rather have a stable hand who offers a high floor for performances (even at the cost of high ceiling).

Hope he proves me wrong.

Meh. I mean, he might be worse than Kepa but he's been seen as a talent, he might have coachable upside, and Kepa is burnt at Arsenal after those two cup debacles. There's no sense in keeping a hold of Kepa in case he's 20% less shit than this guy, who'd already have to be another flop to prove such an assessment. There is some sense in rolling the dice on backup keepers.

Honestly, if the worst happens and Raya gets injured at a crucial moment, a dodgy keeper can derail a season. I remember the very dark days of Richard Wright where we threw away multiple games purely because of his performances. Meslier has a similar jittery disposition and soft hands.

Kepa going is fine but Meslier as second choice is poor.

I don't think there is. City and Liverpool spent 30m on Trafford and Mamardashvili as backup goalkeepers and they have security when they play in cup games.

He'd definitely be a weak second choice but so was Kepa. Its probably an area we need to look at properly. Liverpool and City have had strong back ups for years.

Kepa will 100% leave. He's not going to fight it out to be a #2.. He can go somewhere that he can have a chance to be a #1 goalie. This is a pretty weak backup keeper signing though.
