A few years back when they came off shit hot seasons they had to be picked but for various reasons they have had the odd game here or there but generally been very average. Then you get the usual idiots in the media who after every good game are basically at it with their "He's gotta start for me" bollocks. The players are well aware of these pundits and people they have in the media who are essentially putting out propaganda for them so fair play to Tuchel to cutting that bullshit out

The ones that surprise me are Maguire and Wharton. England don't have a particularly great set of CBs and Maguire has been very good for Man Utd this season. Wharton won't make the first XI but he gives something different from midfield.

Another thing about these two are they have never performed for England. If someone has done the business for England you can understand a manager wanting them in the squad despite bad form but if you current form is bad and then you have nothing to point to when it comes to international performances what have you got? Also you need players who are happy to play their role in the squad, those two probably think they should be starters. They have their people in the media banging their drum all the time about them and I have no doubt some of that noise is coming from those players.

Sicario2 Hasn't Toney scored 1.3 goals per game or something like that this season? He plays in a useless league but I don't think it matters for a summer tournament. You're more likely to get goals from him than from anyone else bar Kane. Great inclusion.

Meatwad I’m not going to pay attention to the league phase and first knockout round. Don’t think it will be that meaningful. Basically, that’s the first 88 games of the World Cup, out of 104. To put that into perspective, my first World Cup, Italia 90, had 52 games in total.

The more I look at Tuchel's squad the better it gets. I think he got the centrebacks spot on too. Feel for Colwill who I think is the best of the lot, but he was never going to be at his best this summer with that knee injury.

I think I'll change my stance on England: this is the team to beat this world cup. Really unexpected and joyful selection. Southgate would have messed this up and picked the biggest names.

Toney is a weird one but the idea is probably that, like the last Euros, there will be penalties at some point and he's someone you can rely on to take a good one. I'm never really in favour of bringing someone on to take a penalty having not touched the ball in the tournament (it didn't work with Rashford or Sancho in the previous Euros), but maybe with a squad as large as 26 (it used to be 23) you can afford to take someone for that moment.

One thing which Tuchel needs to control are these leaks. All this stuff has leaked from players and agents, Southgate for whatever his faults were seemed to have that part under control. I get some of those players are upset but this reflects poorly on them that this news has leaked out in this manner.

Toney also probably hasn't played to many minutes, and is now used to hot weather. England's fullbacks probably the weakest point of a very strong squad, and they will have a lot of possession so shouldn't matter too much.
