Wouldn't mercenary suggest turning his back on something that was an option? He was never in the mix for England. He has a couple of different nationalities which is very common in today's society and played for the one that gave him the option, which also happens to be where he was born (even if it was by an unplanned circumstance).

If that's the case, then it makes total sense I just don't think it's that cut and dry.
