Claudius The streaming age is driving fragmentation that we didn’t have under satellite and cable distributors. So now you need to pay $5-10 for multiple services for one sliver of your interests.

If only it were a vertical sliver. For example the trouble with the canalisation of TV content is becoming that mainstream genres are relatively evenly (and thinly) distributed across platforms. The platforms are also frustrating informal content discovery so it's harder to see how shallow their offerings are.

We get all the games here but this season it has required subscriptions to 3 different services - 1 for PL, 1 for CL and 1 for FA and League Cup.
It's Sky for PL, which also includes other sport I watch so it's worth keeping for now. Last season I used a USA Paramount account for CL, FA Cup and League Cup as it seemed the cheapest option that also gave on demand as well as live (needed here with the time difference). It was a bit of faff having to pay using a gift card (without a USA card or phone number) and it didn't always work. This season I couldn't manage to get the gift card anymore so bit the bullet and paid for the CL streaming option. For the FA and League Cup one I've faffed around setting up 7 day free trials with different emails each time (no trial available for the CL option) as didn't want to pay the monthly fee for usually 1 game.

Now there's yet a 4th service for the World Cup to pay for. Never expected it free. I'd assumed it would be on one of the services I already pay for - it's always been on Sky before and the qualifiers and friendlies all have been. But no, another new subscription. It looks like it's free in Australia so might be able to use that, but last thing I want to happen is to sit down to watch a knockout game and the VPN or DNS settings fail.

You guys pay for World Cup coverage? That's fucked man. Ever since I can remember the WC and the Euros have been on BBC/ITV.

I'd say if you have a decent VPN just stream it on BBC Iplayer or ITV Player for free man. Put some bullshit address in the UK and state you have a TV license when they ask and you're good to go.

Big Willie yeah it's always been on Sky here, just I've always had that because that's where all or most of the sport has been so it's never been something extra on top. Same with other world cups (rugby, cricket), Olympics etc. Major events being free to air has not been a thing here like in the UK, apart from usually showing the NZ games free (sometimes delayed rather than live). Although the major FTA network has started picking up sport via their streaming equivalent of Iplayer - Wimbledon and US Open tennis recently being the big ones aswell as NZ home cricket internationals. It's them who have also got the World Cup this time, apparently managing to outbid Sky. They've said 22 of the 104 matches will be free - the NZ games plus some other group games and handful of knockout including the final. But for people like me who try to watch almost every game there will be a paid tournament pass and they still haven't released the price.

I do have BBC and ITV accounts setup which I have used to watch other sporting events. But depending on the cost I may still just pay for it to guarantee I can watch without a VPN or DNS fail which I've had happen.

Sicario2 After we won at St James Park, I said we will win the league this season and immediately booked flights and hotels to London. Other than the Wolves draw which shook my confidence, I still maintain that we will win the league. Thought we would romp to the title as our rivals are in their weakest iteration in a decade but now I think we will just about crawl past the line.

This is a season where everything fell our way. I can't think of a luckier season than this and I can't complain. All the cup draws are ridiculously to our favour, we don't have many or any matches where we can complain that the ref costed us, but we have won many points from referee errors the other way round. Many teams have also suffered injuries/suspension to key players before the played us, but had full team against Citeh etc. I think it's written in the stars we win the league.

I don't have many positives to say about our brand of football so I just hope things continue to fall our way. For the final, we are schooled by Pep but when I saw Kepa in the team sheet I was 99% sure we would lose the match.

Agree with the luck piece but I think the more important thing is that we put ourselves in that position. We’ve finished 2nd for three seasons and continued investing in the team. I think we will see the same thing happen in champions league in next few seasons. If we keep qualifying for the quarters and semis, we will eventually get to a final and maybe even win it.
