I have watched him a lot over the last couple of seasons. I'd take him over Havertz (who seems to get better and better with each long-term injury) any day. Strikers are allowed more mistakes because it's the hardest position on the pitch. I mean, Mateta is not Zlatan or Haaland obviously but he's transformed into a very exciting and effective player in the last couple of seasons.

Coombs to be fair Palace played this game outside of the pressures of it being a ‘title showdown’ and were also at home and because they are Palace they could view it as a free hit. Context was completely different for us.

Saliba, Saka and ode out. And we played more attacking than them. Noni Gyok and martinelli are all poor at combination play (for the level they play at). You're not getting swashbuckling attacking football with that lot.

The case for going there shutting up shop and using that frontline pace to get behind them is a much stronger one than going all out attack.

Pool don't set up the same vs Palace as they do vs us. Of course, seeing how they've been done by Palace 3 times in a row you'd think they would've worked that differently.

It's also great to witness Slott throwing Konate under the bus, calling him out to the whole world.

Klaus Unfortunately, with Salah in tow, that may be all they need to get across the line. Of course, not one can predict these things, but I suspect this is to account for the days when Salah is off (or out for the AFCON).

Mateta would have been a great backup for Havertz for sure. However that ship has sailed. We ride with G14 now 😃

Your point about our forward line not being strong at combination play is fair but then I'd argue that's an error in our recruitment.

Agreed I've already argued it is an error in our recruiting.

From all reports we were happy to see martinelli in the summer. I'd imagine he was going to be replaced with someone who's more of a head up player. And artetas love for a technical striker Isak has been we reported. It's also been leaked consistently that Gyok was bertha's choice not artetas.

Speedster nobody is arguing for swashbuckling attacking football. But that Merino is not likely to make the most of the pacy and direct front three, whereas Nwaneri or Eze would be more suited to driving the ball forward and releasing them if we’re set on sitting back and countering. We’ve seen the story of Merino being the third man too many times to expect it would be different. It’s not shutting up shop and being effective on the counter; its shutting up shop and turning the lights out and hoping you’ll pick something up next time.

Speedster nobody wants to go all-out attack and the reaction to that is to warn against the dangers of going all-out attack. Yeah, I agree it's extremely boring. The good thing is every conversation is voluntary to take part in.

Every team and manager makes mistakes over the season. Arteta made them for City and Liverpool. Today we need to get it right. It's a long season but we can't keeping coming up short in the tougher matches.

Qwiss there’s part of me thinks that, setting performances aside for the sake of argument, dropping points to City, Liverpool and possibly Newcastle isn’t the end of the world when it comes to determining the title at the end of the season. Liverpool and City dropped a lot of points to us at times and still won titles, but they did so on the back of strong records against the remaining 15 league teams. I’m just not confident we are good enough yet to sustain the kind of pace we’d need against the rest if we aren’t taking points off direct rivals.

Tam I don't think we need a perfect record vs the big teams but you need to win some of them.

Only one thing really matters about their loss to Palace, which is that Liverpool dropped 3 points. Now we go to get 3 of our own, and if we do then we're only 2 behind them despite having played some difficult fixtures.

Tbf the scousers have had some tough fixtures crossed off as well: Newcastle away, Arsenal at home and Palace away. They've got Chelsea away coming up as well.
