In the grand scheme of things, I reckon you're nine tenths right. Go by the numbers. If the facts are we're ahead of City, and first of all we estimate City are about as good as us or not much worse, then we will have to correspondingly estimate the Premier League can't be "rolling over" for City relative to Arsenal enough to put City ahead of us despite being not much worse than us.
The alternative take would be that the Premier League, its clubs and its referees, absolutely do grovel before City, City Group, Guardiola, and the north-west press mafia … and so there is a bit of rolling over going on, and City are just a lot worse than it seems. There's a bit of smoke there, but … City are a very good side, so there's not that much fire overall.
However. Within that grand scheme, you must admit that Emery does appear to have a grave personal distaste for the setup at Arsenal that sacked him, and the over-privileged managerial wunderkind who replaced him. Emery's an odd bloke no doubt, but he has refused to shake Arteta's hand not once but twice after Villa losses to Arsenal. That's too odd for mere eccentricity to explain in my book.
