You know what - I always disliked that we replaced Vieira with Fabregas given the physical downgrade it resulted in but Wenger's true error was replacing Gilberto with Flamini. He compounded the first mistake (which was understandable), with FlimFlam. Song and Diaby just didn't quite replace the power we had lost in midfield. Not to mention Denilson.

As for Arteta this is evidence there's long been some benignly cracked aura about him. I wouldn't be at all surprised to learn he has an underactive amygdala or frontal lobe damage.

SimplyThePest I wanted us to get him in the window we signed Arshavin. I thought he'd have been great with Cesc and it was just after we missed out on Alonso so I thought Arteta was the next best solution. That he could cover RM at the time was a factor too.

I think Gilberto's legs had gone by then, he wasn't as box to box anymore and kept sitting deep which created too much space between him and Fabregas which teams kept exploiting.

Keeping Vieira and slowly reducing his vertical movements - kinda like how Gerrard was moved back - may have been a good option to transition him into a deeper role behind Fabregas.

daredevil had we kept Vieira, at least for another year or two, I don't think we end up falling off the proverbial points cliff we did 05-07. From an 80-90 point team to low-mid 60s. Shocking. Patrick leaving created an almost 20 year leadership void that we've only just managed to recover, IMO (kudos to Arteta).

Lasagna unfortunately was a nightmare. Mourinho's story about him was hilarious that his agent would be in his office every week asking for a payrise if he played or a transfer if he didnt.

He lasted like one season at Chelsea and only 6 months at Arsenal. TBF, he ended up at Real but he was not waiting around for anyone and wanted to start every game.

In hindsight, he should have played ahead of Flamini who ended up fucking off as well
