that's the one thing all those claiming Arteta did brilliantly in weeding out the deplorables, being cutthroat at what needs doing etc never seem to notice. Why be ruthless with the players at your disposal burning through hundreds of millions both in existing assets and buying new guys but don't extend the same courtesy to the manager who hasn't delivered in five years.

If we don't win the PL or CL then the hierarchy need to carefully evaluate the attitude of the players. You clearly need them to believe in the manager and their own ability to win. I'm really reluctant to say a manager has to win or else, because winning the league relies on so many factors, some of which are outside your control - injuries, tight decisions, other teams having the year of their lives etc.

But, eventually a narrative sticks, and a narrative of never winning becomes really hard to overcome.

I'd hate for our best players to start to think they couldn't win anything under the current Arsenal regime. Saka will be 24 in a few weeks so he could easily be here another 4 seasons and still have plenty of time to leave to go and chase trophies, but it would be so much easier for everyone if we just won it now.

Sicario2 What's really exciting for me now is that if this season turned out to be the end of Arteta, the new manager would be inheriting a top quality squad. As we stand today, there's no rebuilding to be done.

I don't know if Gyokeres and Eze will be successes this season, but they were the correct signings to make so I can't complain about this transfer window after what's happened on the evening of 20th August.

If they don't produce, the fault has to lie with Arteta as there's a lot of quality available in attack.

Burnwinter Yep, it doesn't matter what other people say. There wasn't even a concensus around this time last year on whether Liverpool would finish in the top 4. Just cancel out the noise and keep picking up three point on match days while the team settles.

If we think we've strenghtened properly then that's the baseline. The criteria for success and failure isn't set by pundits or betting companies, it's based on our own evaluation of where we are. Nothing worse than managers and sporting directors who want to take credit for doing a great job but at the same time don't want to share the responsibility for failure. I think it bleeds into the fandom after a while too: Arguing over circumstances with pundits, arguing with fans of the opposition... none of that stuff matters. Don't waste time trying to convince them.

Berteta obviously think we can win with this squad, and so do I. Now go show them.
