Burnwinter Arteta had the same level of control and financial freedom to work with as Pep did at City. If someone with Artetas inadequacies can get 2nd place three times and have the board back him through repeated midtable finishes I don't see a scenario where Pep doesn't win it here.

Nah. I don't need to over-argue my point, Arteta didn't walk into a club that Mancini had already taken "over the edge" and which didn't have a non-dysfunctional rival spending up as big as him at the time. The conditions at Arsenal were clearly substantially different.

I will add I am not saying Guardiola isn't a brilliant manager as I made clear. I am saying Guardiola's never taken a top flight club from outside contention to in contention and Arteta has, and I think that's a fact as far as facts go, but if it's not, enlighten me.

Depends how you literal you're being. Arteta took over mid season in 19/20 but the team he took over finished with 70 points and in an EL final a few months before. Guardiola took Barcelona at the start of 08/09 when they had just finished the season with 67 points. No one back then would have thought Rijkaards team minus Ronaldinho was going to win a sextuple within a season, also Arteta needed two and a half seasons spent in midtable mediocrity and boatloads spent before we even started to compete.

We haven't won the league since 2004 mate, find me a club Guardiola has coached at where that club hasn't won it lately. Also reckon we'd have won the league under Arteta if we had 2008 Lionel Messi turning out for us?

I said something very, very uncontroversial. That was my point, I don't know why you're making a meal out of it. What are we supposed to say Guardiola of all managers has fucking struggled in difficult conditions at any stage? No, we have to talk about how heroic he is and complain about the money Arsenal spends.

Gurgen they did Dec adversity. In December and January this season, they were playing a lot of squad players and youth because of injuries. So he just went out and bought two of the best players in the league. Problem solved.

Btw, some perspective:, 9 of the 14 highest paid players in the entire Premier League are at City. Guehi earns £300k, and he’s only the third highest earning centre back on their books. In total, they pay around £300m in wages versus our £230m per year (approx 30% more). This is the behemoth we are keeping ahead of in the league

Claudius Sometimes, buying more and ideally better players is the most pragmatic solution. I think we could've landed Semenyo in January if we'd tried (maybe even last summer but opted for fucking Madueke instead). He is exactly what we could have done with. Bloke's apparently an Arsenal fan and it's not like we don't have the money. Instead, we sit on our hands for whatever reason and watch him have an immediate impact for our main title rival.

Amy Lawrence was well worth listening to on the most recent Handbrake Off for a bit of perspective. We are literally in unprecedented times as Arsenal fans, Champions League semi final and top of the league. We should be embracing this position, not complaining about it.

RocktheCasbah I'm very aware how well we're doing within the context of our history (recent or otherwise) but I did take some issue with what she had to say. I don't begrudge anyone feeling excited or proud of where we are (I'm proud of where we are) but I understand (and feel myself) the sense of ominous pessimism about our situation given the slow decline of our performances since the turn of the year. And I think to completely ignore that isn't painting the full picture of our season. Yes, we've done well to get to this point but surely no one is ignorant of how much we're struggling right now?

Because being in a CL sem and top of the league will mean very little if we finish the season empty-handed for another season.

RocktheCasbah I did listen to that and I think it's fair for sure. For me personally it's more I appreciate these moments but I want us to get it done. Arsenal of all the "big" clubs have underachieved fun these positions the most it feels. I often think of spurs moment near the top I'm sure it was great but if you fall short it's not so memorable.

My main worry is lack of faith in the team at the moment to get over the big moments. But it is in their hands and a big way to do something like that is to get a result today, a win nobody in football would really be expecting us to get that so would be a big statement. The team have spoken well but it's time to do only delivering a result shows you have the fight and the quality we all hope they have.

Don Pacifico posted before your reply but essentially that was my main issue is that doesn't mean a lot of you don't win. I also didn't like the comment about how some fans were expressing concern like they were doing it with no reason when as you say there are plenty of reasons to have that perspective. Also the position on look city are out and Chelsea and Newcastle etc and we are in. That's true and fine but we had the easiest draws we could in this stage whereas the others had Madrid, Barca and Psg. In our current form I'm not sure we get past them either it's not as simple as people are just being negative.

Come on, we didn't just happen on an easy draw. I totally accept we were a little lucky not to end up on the City/Madrid path, but equally we earned the easier draw by finishing top of the league phase. I feel like I've read countless posts from you saying that that wasn't really important, but obviously it was.

Don Pacifico I think a lot of the complaints around our football are also ignoring the context around the team and who's been available to the manager this season.

We all know a fully fit Odegaard and Saka - and for that matter Havertz up top - would make a huge difference to how we look going forward, yet their continued unavailability is treated here as just something the manager should somehow be able to ride. Ignoring the fact that actually, he has. We just don't like how it looks.

RocktheCasbah no that's fair we earned the route through the group that's fine. But the other teams are out more down to the quality of opposition rather then a big difference between us and them. It felt too me when I listened that it was trying to make a point about we are worried about city but look they got dumped out of the champions League and we didn't. But going out to real Madrid isn't a big indicator as they are a difficult team whereas the two we played after not top tier teams so we should be able to progress.

The lack of importance I've expressed was more on the matches and whether they had the same competitive edge as games with more jeopardy and I don't think that do in that phase that's why I think they aren't the same environment. I don't think all teams have cared the same. When they go behind they haven't always shown the same focus you have in the knock out and I think you can see that more in these stages. It's great to finish near the top I just don't read as much info the results at that point

The English clubs for the most part finished in the top 8 and Bayern it didn't particularly help them either through here.
