Qwiss where has this story come from? I keep seeing people online saying it but what the source for this claim?
Reading in between the lines of the reporting and statements from Nwaneri.

Arsenal are talking to the 18-year-old about a new contract, and a clear pathway to regular first-team minutes is a key consideration.
Nwaneri exhibited a clear ability to play on the right flank during Bukayo Saka’s absence. Do Arsenal see him continuing there, or are they prepared to shift him inside to his more natural role as a No 8?
Emphasis added. I think, based on what we've seen, the idea that midfield is "his more natural role" is a talking point taken from somewhere on high (i.e. probably Nwaneri's agent).

Talking about Nwaneri's contract extension:
On Nwaneri, I do think there’s probably a conversation to be had about how Arsenal foresee his development in the next 24 months or so. Do they want to continue using him on the wing or as a No 8?

Ethan Nwaneri can play [out wide] but in the long term, he has been earmarked for a central role. That leaves Arsenal without an obvious alternative to Bukayo Saka.
Sounds like the "conversation to be had" about Nwaneri's position took place.
June 7th:
All of a sudden we hear that we want to sign a Bukayo Saka backup. As far as I'm aware, this was the first time this was reported.

Nwaneri interview where he says:
You can see sometimes I’m a natural midfielder.
I think his midfield performances were notable in the sense that you could not see that he is a natural midfielder at all. Sounds like this is just what he wants (which is fine, but kinda inconvenient for the club).

Arsenal see Nwaneri’s future in central areas rather than on the flank.
