As for ‘up and coming’ players yes sure but not for the sake of it. We signed Marquinhos and he turned to shit. At the same time under Artera we’ve signed Gabriel, Kiowr, Timber and Cala and they have all been good (albeit question marks over the latter injury record).

Your analysis is too black and white. When we’ve made our signings we’ve signed from both pots if you like.

If Madueke played for Palace or Fulham and we were signing him there would be a lot less angst, it’s just the Chelsea angle imo.

I don't disagree completely with the premise but with everything we're trying to do this summer, do you think £40-50m is a good investment of funds when we could find a 'non-PL Madueke' for half the price to be Saka's back-up?

I don't know about that. Can't imagine too many would be excited to sign Ismael Sarr for this much. We are looking for players who out perform Trossard, Madueke isn't at that level. So really you're paying big money for a guy you hope will improve and he's already 23. The price is the biggest issue here considering he's going to spend most of the season playing second fiddle to Saka anyway. I didn't even want us going for Mbuemo who's much better because he's a right winger.

Don Pacifico depends on the mystery player, the fact we can’t even name one suggests the reason we are going for Madueke. Arsenal fans are funny, for years we have been crying out for a Saka replacement and when we get one we are still not happy.

If we got Madueke and it meant Ethan stayed and we still got our striker and LW (and the others that are a formality) would you be ok with it?

You don’t want to go from a 8.5/10 player (in Saka) to a 6 or 6.5/10 (if we signed a ‘non Prem’ nobody) player. Better to go down to a 7.5/10 (which is what madueke is but with room for improvement).

We got to hit the hit the ground running next season, we don’t have time to bed in a non-PL winger who may take 6-12 months to adapt. Madueke is from London and played in this league, I rather pay £10-15m more for less risk.

Just think how much fun we will have v Chelsea fans if he is a hit/scores against them etc.

Don Pacifico better off getting bakayoko from PSV for 15-20m. he's basically madueke of 2-3 years ago at half the price. that's the price range for any saka back-up when we have so many other moles to whack

lorddulaarsenal not a priority, not a profile that excites me and not keen on bailing Chelsea out with 50m. He’s not a bad player and we could find use for him but I find it hard to believe that there aren’t any other options out there to be our back up RW

If we get literally every other player we need then, sure, Arteta can do whatever he likes but this feels like a massive misallocation of time and financial resources.

During the same period United and Chelsea have spammed away roughly that much cash on just one flop, and done it more than once. I do take your point, but it's Liverpool who've got a claim to outdoing us in the market.

Qwiss this is my thing with the resources which get have waived away sometimes. Even with havertz who has been a good addition at still paid too much at the time. But we seem to progress these types of deals quickly with no thought and then spend ages delaying and waiting not paying the price for the real game changing positions. That's what makes me worried about how we are going sky this all. This is not a player who will make us better so why are we progressing so quickly.

23 years old. Full England international with good experience and obvious talent. It’s not breaking the bank - will probably recover it by selling Zinchenko. Adds much needed depth on both wings. It’s a top signing.

When Arsenal fans call for back up signings in certain areas what they want is high quality or good value. Not a Kepa level signing at an Olise level price.

Let me ask you in a different way. Would you be happy to sign Madueke if it meant we could only get one of either a striker of a LW? Meaning Madueke ends up as one of our 2 attacking signings?

Klaus what about the two seasons before when we went blow for blow with one of the best sides this country has ever seen and a side backed by an oil rich country? We’ve gone from whipping boys to not losing a match against the top sides in something like 20 games. We battered Real Madrid and went to toe to toe with PSG for 90% of the tie despite all the injuries.

Last season was a massive disappointment but that wasn’t due to our first XI not being good enough, it was mainly down to a disastrous summer window where we left ourselves massively short in attack and suffered unprecedented injury crisis. Some of those injuries might be down to bad luck but it is a fair argument that our lack of depth contributed massively.And it looks like this window we are working hard to address that.

DiabyKungFu That’s fair and if we are signing him and losing out on others then I’d have some reservations as well but it doesn’t sound like that is the case. Though I should add I do remain dubious that we will sign a LW, RW, another attacking player and a CF. That is on top of signing a GK, CB, 2 x CM. I would love this to be true, but I’ve been following Arsenal long enough!

Sicario2 this kind of thing is disingenuous. We have many issues with the team that need improvement but we absolutely need a good forward and a striker. These will massively help take the focus and pressure off Saka and you could rest him more just with that. A reserve might be a nice to have but it isn't going to win us a title those other 2 positions are so all funds should be focused on landing them. If we put 50m down on this then end agree we supposedly negotiating so much on the actual positions we want just pay the 100m or whatever.

The other thing about it is Chelsea fans even if they are rivals do watch their team if they are saying the guy is a terrible finisher and not a great player for them then you should take that into your calculation that Nadine w this is quite a risk. It's like sterling I actually had paid attention to him before he came to us and it was obvious from that he was a dud but there was still a sense no that's just Chelsea that don't get it etc. This would really be a negative use of our resources.

awooga83 because it's an easier/quicker deal to do. The player is interested, we have a need, the player fills that need. It presumably won't affect the outcomes of the pursuit of our main targets (left wing, center forward). I don't see a problem here, except one of perception, pertaining to "Chelsea bins" and pricing. But we actually don't even know the price yet.

I like the profile of the signing. We are obviously moving fast to fill out the squad with opportunistic signings (players who want to stay in London, are experienced in the PL, and relatively cheap), and taking our time with the more complicated / bigger deals. And that's okay.

Hopefully Madueke isn't as expensive as say Havertz was, but can become as functional and appreciated (while acknowledging his limitations) as the German has been in his time here.

awooga83 the Havertz transfer was a big mistake IMO. Is he a load of old shit who can't do anything right? No of course not but we spent €75m on him, that was crazy for a guy we are 2 years later trying to keep out of the first XI. Our 3rd most expensive signing ever. For very little above that €75m Chelsea signed Palmer and Jackson.
