That's not what anybody is saying. At least, nobody with any reason. There were plenty of options that wouldn't just have been any striker. Arteta knows it, that's why he's not happy. If he's telling us he's disappointed, I'm sure he's raging behind the scenes.

Coombs I do feel like there is some nuance here between my opinion and yours Coombs. To your point, Arteta knows exactly what's going on behind the scenes. We can only guess but for example, if Sesko actually WAS available but the discussion was "Buy him now for 85m or in the summer for 70m", I could see why a manager would say, the premium is worth bringing in reinforcements especially if its simply pulling forward one of our targets we would be happy with in the summer. Or if Nico Williams wasn't demanding 300k a week like its rumored and it was closer to 200k a week but Bilbao was uncompromising in demanding the whole release clause up front. I feel like these may have been closer to the scenarios we were facing behind the scenes and I could both understand Arteta's frustration as someone who needs to manage the current squad while also understanding the leadership's perspective of squeezing every last drop out of the resources we have when competing against clubs that seemingly have no limit. I doubt we will ever know. I think we are doing ourselves a disservice by not committing to a Director of Football right now since it also leaves low hanging fruit for everyone to criticize when we don't pull off moves (and it may be hindering us in these larger transfer negotiations as well). Personally I hope we bring in an outside hire as DoF with experience negotiating high profile transfers as I think that taking a gamble on Ayto is just opening us up to more risk than we need right now and I'd like someone who will be unafraid to push back against Lewis/Kroenke and even Arteta.

Tactics our plan B is probably Rice with someone else at 8, maybe Havertz, maybe Merino, we might even see MLS or Nwaneri there. I don't think we are light on bodies for the DM position (if we sign Zubi). Suitability maybe.

Completely agreed, I know people love a clear out, but I hate it. There's too much upheaval and if there are more exits than additions (when your team is good), it always hurts in the short term.

Tactics if they both go we definitely need Zubi plus one. Looks like they rate this young Norwegian bloke so we could have - Ode / Nypan, Rice / Merino and Zubi. I guess Ethan and MLS can also play midfield, but we will have lost a lot of experience and would be banking on youth as our backup in a season when we should be expecting to battle for the title again. I wouldn't be surprised to see Zubi, Nypan and another 30 year old come into midfield.

Plus a striker, a winger, a GK and possibly even a centre back if Kiwior leaves. It's going to be a busy summer for a club currently lacking a DoF.
