Tam seems to me that man-before-ball is a foul, full stop. There aren't any exceptions to that in any rule I'm aware of. It's pretty cut and dried. Whether Taylor initially gave it for some other aspect of theactions seems irrelevant to me.
Coombs it is indeed irrelevant. If you as VAR see there is another foul than the one the ref called, you don't call him to the screen.
Tam this is a much clearer articulation of my point. I don't think he gives the penalty for the contact with the knee. It's focused on the slide challenge which I believe was judged on he didn't play the ball and took Saka out. In which case VAR was acting ont response to what the ref gave and that's why that aspect gets overturned. They aren't looking at any other aspects on the move and I don't think the knee collision factors into their assessment and VAR wouldn't be focused on it because that's not what the ref gave the decision for. They will focus it on what the ref told them he gave it for which is likely I think he tripped him and didn't get the ball.
awooga83 but we typically look for the overall play during VAR. we have seen cancelled goals for earlier fouls etc.
so. I don't understand this view point that, VAR is only looking at why the penalty was awarded.

We should not accept this, because they are constantly fucking us over for things that have nothing to do with what the ref originally blew for.
My understanding is that the angle from the TV feed that clearly shows the knee to knee contact wasn't available to VAR. (This from arsecast, I can't vouch for it independently.)
RowJimmy you don't need the angle. It is physically impossible to get the ball without taking the player out first in that situation. It's just common sense.
Coombs yeah its always us that they seem to lack an angle for. Reminds me of the ball going out of play against Newcastle.
