Clrnc that doesn’t make sense numerically. After today’s games, we will have played a schedule where 4 of our 6 games are against teams that are top 14 (or higher if we lose). There are 36 teams on the league. On average our opponent strength should be around 18th.

Claudius I'm just going by what everyone said above. Majority are happy when the draw is out.

Anyway you can't say that because Monaco hasn't played and Sporting has already played. So that particular stat is only accurate after today. But in any case ignoring how some of these clubs are punching above their weight, Atalanta Sporting and Monaco is probably what everyone didn't mind from those particular pots as compared to drawing Real Madrid Bayern etc even though they are underperforming now.

I wonder how uefa feels after making this champions league tournament easy for big teams to get to phase 2 by doing this Swiss league and then seeing their favorite teams like Real Madrid and PSG doing their best to flunk out. Must be distressing for these corrupt theivss

I've never really understood how it's easier for big teams. Unless you ended up in a group of death, the group phase usually guaranteed a route to the last 16 for any half decent team.

The Swiss format provides a bit more of a safety blanket, but it also significantly increases the chances of lesser teams to accumulate points. A team like Brest would have had no chance, now they have an excellent chance of a CL knockout game and with a bit of luck with the draw, a CL last 16 place.

I was always open minded but I'm convince now that this format is better.

goon agreed. But to control against the variances in schedule, UEFA made 24 teams qualify for the knockouts, ensuring their favourites wouldn’t miss out. But some of them are still flailing

Strictly speaking, it's just expanded the group/league stage so that all but the top 8 of those top teams will now have to play a knockout game against another potential 'top side' to get to the last 16.

The motivation was money, not making an incredibly easy route to the last 16 any easier. They wanted more games, more games between top sides and more places for top sides from top league to enter the competition. I think like most fans who were complaining about it, they hadn't factored in that it would actually make it harder for them to progress.

goon it was money and to counter the super league which was was about big teams not be eliminated. I don't think the previous format was great I just don't think this one adds anything and the whole set up is even when a Madrid have a bad time they are still highly likely to progress and still be in the champions League even if they have to play another game.

It's very much like uefa international qualifiers you don't really care about the qualifying phase because it's all filler and nothing really matters until you are in the serious tournament with the knock out.

My biggest issue is it will make the big teams meeting really boring as you'll play them so regularly in games that don't mean much. Before it was rarer and if you played a big side you either got a unlucky group which would be interesting or you were deeper in the tournament again making it exciting. Now you'll get loads of these are this stage which are just who really cares.
