Bring Back Kerrea Gilbert Credit to Chelsea. They've done the simple maths which shows that typically the richest teams are the best performing teams in football. It's simple, if your squad is filled with more talented players in the right configuration in each position each matchday, you will win games. Don't like they way they've gone about it, but I've said before their frontline and midfield depth is the best i've seen post Covid in this league. it's insane.

Claudius -- I think they and Liverpool have also demonstrated the value of depth and competition. We often hear that it's all about the starting XI, but I look enviably at Liverpool who have 4 starters (Salah, Diaz, Gakpo, and Nunez) for 3 forward positions and 4 starters (Gravenberch, Jones, McAllister, Szboz) for 3 midfield positions.

We have unhealthy competition in contrast. It's a race to the bottom between Trossard and Martinelli, and Jesus and Sterling.

Arteta needs to look at what Curtis Jones is doing for Liverpool and fast track Nwaneri for a similar impact/role.

Without Salah the rest of them look a lot less enviable. I don't think those midfield options are better than ours for instance. We have Odegaard, Rice, Partey, Merino who are a better 4. Ode towers above that Liverpool midfield.

In the front like Diaz is a good player definitely. Gakpo and Nunez though have less goals between them than Havertz alone.

Liverpool don't have great depth at all. They've shown that over the last 2 seasons. An injury to Salah like the one we had for Odegaard and they'd be done. They're top because they haven't needed to rely on their back ups, not because their back ups are good.

Tam Is it some kind of joke that it's taken six weeks or something to sack this bloke for basically being high while refereeing matches?

Qwiss to be fair he's missing Jota from that list as well. They are reliant on Salah but I think their attack wpuld cope much better without him than ours would without Odegaard.

Qwiss I am pretty sure their win rate is higher without Salah playing. They always do better without him when he leaves for AFCON.

Pepe LeFrits well when you have Jota you need depth. It's like our defensive depth having Tominyasu.

And I disagree on them coping better without Salah. Even the loss of Konate saw an immediate issue with their form. Every team in this league is heavily reliant on their stars and their other main players.

Likewise their defense is a Trent or VVD injury away from calamity. They have nobody good beyond their first 4 and have largely been able to play all games with at least 3 of them.
There isn’t a single team in the league that has depth in all areas of the field. Even Chelsea after a likely illegal £1.2bn splurge don’t have defenders beyond Cucarella

Liverpool will go through a phase where they will drop plenty of points. Id be amazed if they get more than 85.

The real issue is we’ve found ourselves in a position where we need another insane second half of the season - in fact it needs to be pretty flawless form now - 20 wins out of 23 just to match last seasons total. Possible but a tall order, especially with no end in sight for injury issues.

goon yep I see Liverpool hitting a poor spell but right now I just can't see us catching them regardless. The gaps not that big, we just don't look up to it.

Our fixtures have been tough relative to others - having played most of the top sides away from home. Should bode well for the second half of the season

We are currently -3 for points gained against the equivalent fixtures from last season. Liverpool are currently 0. That gives one hope.

The problem is we are comparing to last season which was already not good enough. We went on an almost perfect run with just 4 drop points after this stage just go be in the running. So this time round even a perfect run is unlikely to be enough.

first half of last season was sketchy. if we're running 6 points behind what was a fairly sedate early season pace, then we're pretty much screwed

To be fair if we win our next 3 it will be down to -1, if we win our next four it will be +2. After that though we will be under huge pressure to keep pace with last year.

Actually, I think we're in about the same form as last season, we're just not pulling out all the unlikely wins.

Given City are off the boil and Liverpool have started to drop points, if somehow we were to rally tremendously in the back half of the season, we'd be in with a great shot.

Our problem is that this side's only real get out of jail free card is Saka. We look very containable and therefore very beatable. We're not gonna have any fifty point half season at this rate.

Burnwinter yep toughest fixtures out the way, screwed by officials and hurt by injuries yet I can’t think of any match where we’ve been outplayed.

Upgrade left wing and we improve a lot.
