Can't lie. I liked the guy, one of the few Argenrine players I have ever actually liked. The way he just bazooka'd shots was just next level.

That goal against us was a belter, but the one against United was filthy. Shades of Thierry vs Roy Carrol in 04.

Batistuta was something special - could score from more or less any situation he was placed into with the technique and power to fashion his own chances.

Of course the game has changed, and for worse. I honestly can't watch any full 90 minute football outside of Arsenal games (which, being totally honest, aren't always great either) and the Euro/World Cup. Bores the shit out of me.

Highest levels of football, outside of Serie A, were more chaotic back then which added to the entertainment and charm. Teams from, like, Russia or Romania could travel to England and play our best teams off the park.

I also don't watch that much football outside of Arsenal and the World Cup, but the sport's still good enough that it's the only one I have a full time interest in. If I'm on the couch and scrolling through TV channels and stumble on, say, tennis, golf or Formula One, my instant reaction is to change the channel as fast as humanly possible.

Well we've also got adult lives and can't dedicate as much time to just footy, but I sort of feel the same. I would at least make time to catch Real Madrid and Barcelona in years past, not anymore. These days my focus is squarely on Arsenal and Man U. They're my #2 team!

Pretty much this. Especially with the time difference here it's quite a commitment. I go a bit crazy for a month for the Euros/World Cup and try to watch every game but I couldn't do it every week. Pretty much only watch the FA Cup and CL finals outside of Arsenal for club games.

Football is indeed boring as hell. I can't believe anyone not supporting a team would enjoy watching it.

even when i was younger i really only cared about my teams (different pro sports and UCLA). i always found it hard to watch a game that i wasn't emotionally invested in. i can see why sports need gambling and fantasy sports, since i don't participate in those the only thing i have is my support of the clubs/school. remove that component and it's hard to be interested.

The WC and the CL is by farrrr - the best thing about football. The Qatar WC was incredible and the CL quarters onwards is always champagne and super memorable.

Way better than watching us play fucking West Ham, Bournemouth, Brighton and whatever else shit the PL has to offer.

I think football is still good and you just remember the best bits of the old days a rather than 2 teams just lumping it at each other. I don't think anything is as bad now as those Mourinho vs Rafa matches.

Did you even watch it, cause it sounds like you're bitching without having done so?

The tournament was easily the best since 1998, and the final was the best ever. In the last 40 years, only 98 and 86 were probably better.

The fact that it was held mid-season meant the quality and intensity was higher than the usual post-season fatigue driven tournaments where all the best players look jaded.

Messi inspired Argentina run. Croatia reaching the semis. Morocco impressing. Mbappe gunning but ultimately failing. It was a great tournament.

daredevil I watched part of it. It was in fucking Qatar. I guess it was amazing if you enjoy coffins going back to Nepal for air conditioned stadiums that will never be used again.
