Said to a friend yesterday that if Calafiori can patch together a couple of successful years before his leg gives up and falls off he will end up as one of my top 10 favourite footballers of all time. I've never seen a fullback with this skillset: he's got world class attributes all across the board. No wonder the cosmic justice felt the need to kneecap him to keep him mortal. He's Achilles with a bum knee instead of a heel.

Surprising how much resistance there was to him when he first arrived. This guy is a total footballer. Had to be a nightmare for opposing managers because they have no idea what he will do - and can create gaps in defense in a man to man system.

banduan nope. There was a lot of anger that he wasn’t a striker. Go back and read the comments. People were livid that we entered another season with a top striker signing and decided that the players who arrived were in lieu of one.

Claudius that sounds like people (correctly) being upset we didn't get a striker rather than upset we signed Cala.

Qwiss it often came through as Cala was a waste of money. Which is different from the issue that we were failing to bring in attackers. The two were being tied closely when it wasn't really the case that they were.

Andrea Berta has since shown that Edu was messing around when it comes to recruiting forwards by getting Eze, Gyok and Madueke in one summer. Given our capture of Rice, Cala, Havertz and others, I thought Edu was doing a decent job. But Bert has shown that there are levels to this

Claudius I think what Edu managed was to avoid disaster signings to an extent. He made very few howlers but he didn't make a lot of great signings either. You mention Havertz and Cala there and I'm not sure I consider either brilliant signings. Cala because his injury issues were known and Havertz because his price and wages were at a level where that deal was very easy to do. Rice is a big one, sure we paid a lot but other clubs were willing to go big for him too. His approach was conservative enough but it was probably not the worst thing for the situation we were in. Berta will probably have a couple of big flops but you need to take those swings when you are at the level we are now. Upgrading this team is getting harder and harder so the signings need to be riskier. Just look at how many people on this forum were hand wringing about Liverpool getting Isak and Wirtz.

Qwiss I'm big on both the Havertz and Cala signings. Two of my favorite players. They make the team function better particularly on attack when they're on. I just love their individual skill, teamwork, and effort applied.
