Coombs I do think a lot of this politics is a bit of theatre. Families and friends have fallen out of their politics whereas the politicians themselves usually have good relations with each other!

I'm a bit mixed on RFK Jr, some of the stuff about vaccines is crazy but he is completely right about all the shit they put in American food. Remember on Reddit a few years back a post comparing UK to US products and was crazy how many extra things they add in.

Similarly the Pharmaceutical companies don't exactly deserve to be treated lightly.

JazzG I remember reading about a load of chemicals and stuff they were allowed to put in food advertised as "Organic" in the US that was outright banned in the EU.

JazzG I'm interested to see if RFK affects enough change to ruffle corporate America and big agricultures feathers, and if trump tells him to stand down as a result. they seem to think he's just going to gut the FDA, but i saw him talking about taking on coca cola about some of their products ingredients. some interesting dynamics at play there

Gazza M — be interesting to see what happens to the corn industry if there’s tariffs and RFK/FDA pressure to move away from corn syrup.

And at the end of the day, the chemicals are nasty, but the bigger issue is how much high fructose corn syrup (sugar) is added to all food.

That dynamic will be interesting, Trump is known to flip flop but RFK will be wanting to go hard I think. Maybe they compromise in the middle or it all goes tits up!

RFK is a confounding character. he was the only candidate in the entire cycle to actually criticise 'citizens united' and its corrosive impact on politics, for example. or talking about the fairness doctrine being killed by Reagan, giving rise to profit driven news. it sucks that his support was ultimately for sale to highest bidder. I had hoped he had a bit more integrity than to openly endorse and campaign with trump. given his background in environmental law, I would've been happier if he'd been given a post as head of the EPA rather than the health department. imo he's turning a blind eye to alot of trumps stances on deregulation and concessions for the fossil fuel industry.

Makes a mockery of what the Democrats have been preaching for years now. Though I do get it, if I was in his position I'd have done the same. He waited just before leaving office and when the election was over...

JazzG this is how corruption sets in. Trump stretches the boundaries. Others follow. And it’s normalized. We’ve seen it play out many times in various African countries, and it’s a fucking tough road back to undo it. A number of Democrat friends I’ve talked to since this was announced are fully in support - because the other guys would do it. This is how Trump breaks norms and institutions.

MistaT He pleaded guilty to the charges, the fact he got charged and sentenced while his dad was in power to me shows that he simply has no defence for this. He got done for drug use, gun possession and then separately for tax evasion.

This blanket pardon over a very specific time period to me shows more was gonna come out and he has made sure he won't get done for it. If it had been my son I would have done the same but he publicly said a few times he wouldn't pardon him but I suppose he doesn't give a shit now so why the hell not. The problem is for the Democrats because they have no way of justifying this.

US politics is as dynastic as the US wealth that controls it. If Trump wrecks norms and all that, Joe pardoning Hunter is pretty small fry. It's over unlawful gun possession (as opposed to the ubiquitous lawful kind) and failed and repaid tax evasion (as opposed to the ubiquitous successful kind) right?

Either pardon Hunter (stupid janky WASP name) or get serious and send one hundred thousand other drug-abusing family trust beneficiaries to jail along with him. Dubya can lead them. That would at least begin to resemble justice.

In actually significant news, someone at the State Department has pulled the big red emergency lever marked "Syria" over the past week or so ... get ready for an awful lot of "you condemn Netanyahu but will you also condemn Assad?" this Christmas.

JazzG they shouldn't bother justifying anything, just condemn it so you can at least be consistent when the next guy does it, too

the norms are long since dead. the yanks are through the looking glass by re-electing the guy who blatantly tried stealing the last election. the dems should drop the mask, because they're chock-full of machiavellian schemers that could out-evil the trumpsters if they'd drop the pretense
