There's a lot of pretty deranged misinformation circulating, possibly the funniest of which is that the shooter was "Mark Violets", an antifa activist who happens to look exactly like an AS Roma fan site journalist, Marco Violi.
2024 US Election
as if things weren't enough of a mess. this election is going to be craziest in a long long time
Too late to assassinate Biden now, they would've had to get it done yesterday. However, the fallout might hasten the urgency of the Democrats about changing things up. They're going to need to get way, way outside the frame of "Ha ha, this is what you get for not supporting gun control" to cut through this.
I don't think the identity of the shooter will prove to be too relevant, unless he's a migrant. Other than that, Fox News and the rest will readily be able to paint whoever it was as an over-intellectual outsider to normative society.
If he wasnt winning before, Trump is definitely winning now.
i don't see how this foolishness will make anyone who wasn't already sympathetic to this racist asshole feel any different. lying about getting shot in the ear when it's broken glass that nicked his poor little ear. if a bullet from a sniper rifle hit your ear it's doing some damage. but a liar is gonna do what a liar is gonna do.

maybe it's because i'm really into guns, but it always seems like i'm the only one who isn't a trump fanboy when i'm at the gun range. i would be surprised if this shooter wasn't a gun loving republican. biden doesn't engender this level of devotion. probably a ron dekkklantis fanboy.
Meatwad i would be surprised if this shooter wasn't a gun loving republican.
You're spot on if the latest information—the shooter was a registered Republican called Thomas Crooks—is accurate. But I don't think it'll matter, Trump's support will paint him as an "abnormal radicalised outsider" and have a field day.

Elections are won at the margins. Doubters who said they will vote for Biden will stay at home, and undecideds will fall for trump. This could swing the election by 2-3 percentage points, which would mean a landslide win.
That said, I'm not immediately convinced this wins the election for trump. 30 years ago, it would have been a sure thing, but I don't know now..
Burnwinter And like that there's a fake video of "Crooks" (actually some unhinged guy from a few months ago) in circulation denouncing Republicans ...
Republicans already blaming Biden/Dems rhetoric for the attempt.
Election must be over now, right?
republicans unironically preaching about the dangers of inflammatory political rhetoric. such dickheads

goon A last resort for the Democrats could be to orchestrate new candidates in advance of their August convention—it'd have to be done with care to get them in with as much consensus as possible.
I'm not wonkish enough to be definite what extraordinary changes to the primary process are possible, but I read yesterday that can hypothetically happen.
That'd mean the Democrats have got an ugly month or so to look at how this impacts polling.
Gazza M Trump's political career has popularised the term "stochastic violence" ... the trouble is correct reasoning won't affect the outcome of this much.
Inexplicable how someone is able to get a clean shot off at a Presidential candidate in public like this. This could've been a very different (and tragic) story if not for some good fortune.
Trump is now a martyr. Imagine that. I already thought he was going to win. This guarantees it.
flobaba how did they not have every rooftop within range being continuously monitored?
And then it got worse.
- America this century in a nutshell
lorddulaarsenal There's footage of a Secret Service sniper on another rooftop, with scope apparently trained on the shooter, who seems to delay until shots are fired before "taking out" the guy.
God knows what their plan was, but that video is generating conspiracy theories from all directions.

Without getting all too tinfoil-hattish it certainly stinks a bit. There was an eye witness account on BBC website who also said he pointed the shooter out to police several minutes before the firing yet the police did nothing, would have thought they'd be on it in a flash.

this is a man who shares posts on his platform of other republicans saying the only good democrat is a dead democrat and photos of his supporters riding around with pictures of a hogtied joe biden. that guy is now suppose to benefit from the toxic environment he created coming down on him? nah this will be viewed as nearly karmic retribution soon enough. cult members turn on the leaders all the time. shooter was a classic MAGAt, fit the profile to a T: rural young white male, uneducated, AR-15 owner and radicalized by his dear leader donald trump. the chickens came home to roost.
damn life sure comes at you fast. one minute you're happily being your old racist self and then the next you're just at your hero's rally and one of your own takes you out.
this is the guy that got killed (that they seem to forget about when they talk about how the shooter almost took a life).
a POS killed and tried to kill POSs.
damn obama lives rent free in these racists' heads.

Obama getting elected twice is what sent alot of them off the deep end.
musk has officially endorsed trump as well. two thin skinned autocrats in a pod. musk being the owner of twitter going in this election is concerning.
Twitter is an absolute cesspit. I shrined my old personal account a couple of years ago, so I now only access it with my business account that mostly follows other businesses, technologies etc in my field.
Twitter's algorithm recommends a ton of race science, esoteric fascist, boogaloo race war, eugenics accounts as well as all the usual stuff to this account, probably because of what people in US technology are reading I'm guessing. Vance is a Thiel acolyte and Thiel is one of the most worrying people in US politics.
vance getting the nom is actually the first good thing to happen to dems in a while
hes hardcore MAGA, supports a total abortion ban and is against IVF. hes not winning any suburban undecideds, even those that fell for his nonsense in Hillbilly Elegy
Are you sure? Vance is a chameleon who'll be popular with a lot of bigots who frame their prejudices as pragmatism. Considered relative to Mike Pence, I think he's more dangerous: he pushes a similar agenda necessary for support from the Christian right, but replaces the explicit determination of God with a false utility, a "what's best for society?" shrug. Vance seems likely to appeal more than Pence to conservative gay men, non-Christian socially conservative theists, and so on.
dems have been targeting him pretty relentlessly since he won his senate seat because everyone assumed he had bigger aspirations. his book is absolute trash and i think his extreme hard right stance on a ton of issues is going to get magnified now that hes the VP pick.

an example of something that is going to really hurt vance: he's advocated and tried to pass a law allowing police to obtain abortion records so people who have an abortion can be tracked. when things like that get picked up by the mainstream press, it could impact more middle of the road voters who prioritize repro rights. and repro rights is the only issue where like 90% of democrats are in agreement across the US.
Sen. J.D. Vance (R-Ohio), Donald Trump’s pick for vice presidential nominee, pressured federal regulators last June to kill a privacy rule that prevents police from accessing the medical records of people seeking reproductive services, according to documents reviewed by The Lever. The rule was designed to prevent state and local police in anti-abortion states from using private records to hunt down and prosecute people who cross state lines in search of abortion services.
If the Trump-Vance ticket wins this year’s presidential election, the new administration could rescind the rule protecting abortion records from police investigation.
Project 2025, the right-wing manifesto to reshape the federal government if Trump is reelected, proposes sweeping new surveillance of people seeking abortions.
“Because liberal states have now become sanctuaries for abortion tourism, [the U.S. Department of Health and Human Services] should use every available tool, including the cutting of funds, to ensure that every state reports exactly how many abortions take place within its borders, at what gestational age of the child, for what reason, the mother’s state of residence, and by what method,” notes the plan.
The Biden administration proposed the expanded privacy rule in April 2023 in the wake of the Supreme Court’s Dobbs v. Jackson decision, which overturned Roe v. Wade and ended federal abortion protections. The proposed rule expanded upon the long-established Health Insurance Portability and Accountability Act’s Privacy Rule, which requires appropriate safeguards to protect individuals’ health information.
While these privacy laws do not usually apply in the case of a criminal investigation, the proposed rule prohibited health officials from divulging records related to reproductive health care — including for fertility issues, contraception, and miscarriages — even if requested by law enforcement.
The following month, Vance and 28 other conservative lawmakers sent a letter to Health and Human Services Secretary Xavier Becerra demanding the department withdraw the draft rule. They argued that the Biden administration had overstepped its constitutional bounds and unlawfully infringed on congressional power.
“Abortion is not health care,” they wrote. “It is a brutal act that destroys the life of an unborn child and hurts women.”
A Vance spokesperson did not respond when asked whether Trump would rescind the rule if he’s reelected.
mdgoonah41 what a cunt
the majority gets the govt they deserve.
mdgoonah41 What a fascist prick.
democrats have been in shambles for months. Vance has baggage that actually gives them some low hanging fruit to run on
yup, Vance might even get those that can't stand the WH position on Gaza to vote for Genocide Joe.
Meanwhile Netanyahu blatantly backs Trump making a cuckold out of the president.
Laying the groundwork to pull out….

Biden has lost the dressing room. his own party and the corporate media are trying to knife him right now, and he's sounding increasingly trumpish when confronted about it. if he actually holds firm against his own party's overtures and goes on to win the election, it would be a mikel arteta 2021-2024 character arc
Yep, he's toast. If he clings on and loses the election, his political legacy would be viewed as a failure but if he steps down he can preserve some high ground.
IN 2022, THEN-SENATE candidate J.D. Vance sat down with Aimee Terese — a pundit and podcaster little known to the American public, but prominent in the sloppy trenches of hyper-online digital reactionaries — and removed his filter.
“I certainly would like abortion to be illegal nationally,” Vance said in the episode, explaining why regulating abortion at the state level wouldn’t work. “Let’s say Roe v. Wade is overruled,” he said. “Ohio bans abortion … you know, in let’s say 2024. And then, every day, George Soros sends a 747 to Columbus to load up disproportionately black women to get them to go have abortions in California. And of course, the left will celebrate this as a victory for diversity.”

honestly just the worst people on the right. the worst.
I think once the dust settles on this there is going to be some really damning stories that come out about the people who seem to be working overtime to keep Biden as the candidate.
I doubt he lasts the month the way the pressure is building.

It's weird they don't have a formal mechanism to get rid of him without resorting to back channelling and threats. As embarrassing as it is to have 6 Prime Ministers in 14 years in the UK, it sort of also shows that the system is working to spit out an alternative till the electorate is placated.
