Yeah look, as Fred Moten puts it, Zionism and antisemitism, these two things go together. It's got nothing decisive to do with Judaism (though plenty of contingent dependency on Jewish history).

For what it's worth I reckon Epstein likely wasn't primarily motivated by the sex abuses. If he had been, you'd expect a different set of behaviours focused around that.

Out of curiosity: How so? Plenty of the victims were abused by him personally without being trafficked to other VIPs.

Burnwinter yea but again, I don't think it particularly helps to reference any raving antisemite or their theories. Particularly not when Israeli governments current and former respond to literally any criticism with accusations of antisemitism.

Any man or woman with a modicum of human decency will reject any theory that tries to spin his dealings as something nefariously inherently Jewish. Doesn't mean we need to let any critical thinking be guided by that as in "I don't want to sound like these guys so I'll say the exact opposite"

I think it's a bit hard to tell what the balance of Epstein's private motives were and I'm not suggesting he wasn't a motivated abuser, it seems like he was.

I just look at what's been documented about Epstein's activities and networks, and it seems there's diverse efforts that aren't all related to enabling, expanding or protecting his sex abuses. That to me suggests there were other objectives.

I knew a lot of people active in politics in places like New York, Virginia, California, Florida etc. All incredibly sharp people with strong values, a desire to have more social protections. And unlike a lto of African contexts, you can afford to be in politics in America and still have a decent life, so good people persist. Yeah, nah, I don't really agree with this. The belief "this is what the country wants" is a crucial aspect of "the country" not getting what it really might want. That's why there's this experiential gap between the "incredibly sharp people with strong values" one encounters in daily life, and this belief about "the country".

Not sure what you mean by this. People who do good work in local politics in the US are always people who are struggling to some extent or another. Nobody can afford it, especially when even in little towns you've got mining company stooges and landlords buying their way into every office.

Coombs i know lots of people in politics in both US and Africa. My friends in the US can make the trade off between alternative, more lucrative careers. Nobody who is skilled and educated in africa chooses to focus on politics versus my American friends who are either in the party or very active socially. In africa, the middle class is absent from politics because there is no mechanism for funding / supporting them.

I'm with Claud on this on, it's the same in other developing countries too because the lows are much, much lower.

Mirth I genuinely don't know what's being said. There's no support system for participating in politics in the US. It's either your career, or it benefits you personally (landlord, mining company stooge, etc.), or you sacrifice your life, work, and family for a few years to serve your community. That's it.

I'm not talking about socializing at DNC fundraisers. I've run campaigns, my own and for others, and I have been elected to local office. I never heard of any mechanisms.
