I've long made my personal peace with Arteta and his decisions but I fully understand @Clrnc frustration with the excuse making. The gaffer said he couldn't give minutes to the youth because he wanted to play ESR post match when he subbed him on in the 89th minute ffs.

I don't even mind Nwaneri that much although that's a stark reminder how we're not the club we used to be. Cedric over Walters though is just criminal imo

goon I don't see a contradiction here at all. Not that I particularly want us to sign a defender, but let's use the Kounde rumors Dula talked about. Are you saying that if I want Kounde, I must also want Cedric to play in games that don't mean anything now that we don't have Kounde, because if we had him, he'd play? Wanting Kounde, but wanting Walters to play instead of Cedric when we don't have Kounde is contradictory?

Fans will never get all the way behind treating a youngster who's never had a senior start as a sure thing for next season.

It's frustrating Arteta blithely compares academy players to Wilshere or Fabregas. Arteta won't give those players the opportunities that made Wilshere and Fabregas household names at an early age. Before PSV we didn't know how good these kids are, and it's no clearer. Whatever career trajectory they may be on, the fans are kept out of it..

IN FAIRNESS (here he goes again...), as someone lucky enough to watch Cesc in his first appearances for the football club, as well as Jack, these two (and many others) were exposed to first team football via the League Cup rather than the Champions League, although that was part of it. Cesc made his first steps against the mighty Rotherham and then Wolves.. Jack got a bit of cup action and was then packed off to Bolton for a year.

It would be fair to say Arteta has not really used the cups in quite the same way, but then it would also be fair to acknowledge we've not had cup draws conducive to this purpose during his tenure, especially this season - and he still gave Charles Sagoe Jr a start at Brentford. I think a few more games at home against Championship or, heaven forbid a League One side, we'd see a bit more flex.

Coombs Saliba is arguably the best defender in the PL at the moment, you shouldn't need to hit that standard to get a run out in a dead rubber. Cedric and Elneny played and neither of them are at the required standard. If our academy isn't producing players that have the potential to be better than those guys then we are in serious trouble.

goon I’ve noticed there’s a big contradiction between what people want to see in games like this and what they want in the transfer market. For all the talk of wanting to see Walter’s and Sousa given a chance yesterday, the consensus here is that we need to sign another defender.

Well if we aren't bringing through players of course we need to buy them. Thats not a contradiction.

Not sure we need another defender as a priority anyway.
