Seems like it’s just one of those things that’s accepted though it is questioned a bit more these days. I don’t know enough to comment on its merits, but I do think it’s well unfair that there’s often no legal means to watch your own team live, either at the stadium or on TV.

Should do what's done here for cricket if possible. If the match is sold out locally then its shown on local TV. Otherwise it's blacked out

Out of interest, why are other countries not able to get comparable sums for their domestic TV rights? Are fans/TV stations in Germany, Spain, Italy and France unwilling to pay?

It's to encourage people to go see their local lower level team live at that time.

RowJimmy It makes sense for lower levels when it's actually possible to go. But for most PL teams, certainly for us these days it seems virtually impossible to go.
Always find it odd that living on the other side of the world I have legal access to every single game live and on demand, but the local fans have no legal way to watch a lot of the games.

RowJimmy I've always felt this is ridiculous. I'm not a football fan, I'm an Arsenal fan and me not being able to get to the Emirates on a Saturday doesn't make me any likelier to go and see either Beckenham, or Bromley Town. I know there's people that will go - but I reckon the attendances at those games tells you the people that do go are very much in the minority.

Saw the figure today, it's actually stable on revenue I think, as the previous deal was £5bn for three years. So effectively it's an extension along with a grand new (and very expensive sounding) live broadcast schedule.

It was widely reported the league was angling for a lot more, but also that there were many fewer suitors, makes sense I guess.

All European countries should enact legislation holding that football matches are publicly available. And then we watch those absurd salaries collapse.

I think the idea is more likely that a Beckenham fan with nothing to do on a Saturday at 3pm is more likely to go and watch his team rather than watch Arsenal play at 3pm on TV or in a pub.

I know a lot of people who support lower league sides also follow a PL team on the side.

Should add that to the discussion of "populist" theories in that other thread … (or not) …

Call me selectively cynical, but I think punters want their bread and circuses, at least up to a point, and anyway what they want doesn't matter so much. They could topple a government at an election maybe, but the league and its owners will never go quietly.
