Klaus I think we need to see how Garcia does, when we tried to replace Ramsdale a lot of Arsenal fans were not happy about that and clearly has worked out. If the management were looking to replace Raya then they must have seen something. Clearly funds didn't allow it though, probably should have bought him last season if we really wanted him.

Raya's been more consistent than Lehmann - although yet to cross Jens form between 2005-2007.

Mirth until he starts collecting the ball with his studs raised he'll never be Lehman-esque.

Mirth in particular, Mad Jens was the best keeper in Europe in 2006.

Easy to forget now because of the way things turned out, but I think there was a period where Leno was pretty much unplayable too. Higher levels on display than Szczesny for instance, elite reflexes even among elite goalkeepers. Raya looks better in his allround game though.

Klaus Yes, right before his injury which paved the say for Emi. I remember thinking we were fucked then - it was almost impossible to score against him at one point.

Leno was solid but prone to more frequent lapses in concentration. I had a lot of time for him (and will always remember that double save against Spurs fondly) but Raya is comfortably superior.

Leno as a shot stopper was good as any, and better than Raya.

But his distribution was mediocre and he didn’t command his box well.

MistaT I remember the relief when Leno first joined that we finally had a goalkeeper who wasn't a disaster with the ball at his feet, after putting up with that Chelsea agent Cech for three years.

Clearly though Raya is several steps up in that regard. Hell, even Ramsdale was.

If we're giving 4 points for first, 3 for 2nd, etc. then we end up with my ranking of:

Raya - 13
Martinez - 11
Leno - 9
Ramsdale - 7

Seems fine. I think it's being too generous to Martinez though, who ended up being an Aston Villa level goalkeeper. Full credit to the way he has maximised his career with world cup wins and Champions League quarterfinals, etc, but there's a reason he stayed where he is and why things have gone the way they have over the last two years. It's not like Pep or Barca were throwing themselves at him. I think he's probably the black sheep of the list all things considered.

If we're judging by "level" at which keepers have ended up, then the order looks pretty good, although less close than the numbers make it appear.

and which of those keepers on mista's list had pep or barca (since when are they standard for great goalkeeping) throwing themselves at him?

emi is tops on that list for what matters most: winning things. our last trophy came with him as keeper.

ramsdale was relegation fodder before we signed him and arteta quickly learned why and replaced him and he was back to being relegation fodder as soon as he left. now he's a backup to avoid his relegation destiny.

leno found his level at fulham and doesn't have a european quarter-final to go with it.

Think I'd put Raya ahead of Ramsdale for box command. His ability to catch balls is underrated.

FEBravo absolutely Raya has better box command than Ramsdale. By a country mile too. In fact that was one of Ramsdale's weakest attributes besides sweeper keeping and footwork/passing under pressure. Soon as the ball was in the air in the Ramsdale era it was always panic stations! And Ramsdale would never catch an aerial ball. Always punching. It was night and day when Raya came in.
