Top managers in general seem to treat every game as a must win these days as they view winning as a habit that you can't just switch on and off at will

Guardiola has always seen this as a "title" as he calls it. On the continent it's more of a big deal than it is here. And it seemed his best team bar De Bruyne to me? If it wasn't, it was damn close.

And it's always great to win. A great day out for the fans, happy players bonding and cheering as they lift some silverware, and a good vibe to go into the season with.

Clrnc Pretty amazing stat. Didn't think it was correct as he would have been at Everton in 2009 when they were in the FA Cup final and lost to Chelsea. I remember Everton being in that final because it's the last time I was in London staying with my Grandma who lived in Wembley (walking distance to the stadium) and I walked down to the stadium on the day just to soak up all the atmosphere pre-game of all the fans outside before they went in. Just checked and he was indeed injured for the second half of that season so missed the final. I assume he was there, but technically wasn't involved as not in the matchday squad.

Partly because it's a trophy and so of course they want to win - the Invincibles always celebrated winning it in style too - but in Liverpool's case last year it's because they were facing up against the team they thought they'd be going head-to-head against (and for the Invincibles it was usually United they were beating at Wembley) and you don't want to give any sort of edge.

You can't just switch the intensity off and on at will. Facing City, 80,000 people, world watching, curtain raiser to the season - make sure you're on it!
