I went to watch us lose at Wembley against RC Lens, who also beat us this season nearly 30 years later. That's why the pre-match hubris was not based in reality. It still baffles me that people try to predict European competition based off information they have extrapolated from domestic competition. An opponent being 3rd in Portugal tells you very little about how they will fare against a team in England, given that the respective positions of both teams is due to results against entirely different teams. That's not to mention the differences in tactics, styles and tempo.
That's the whole bloody point of European competition, so you have some way to tell who is better when teams compete from different countries.
