The injury being season-ending is less than ideal but I will point out that Kai Havertz and Mikel Merino are basically the same player except Havertz is more mobile. It stretches us thin in other places but it's pretty like-for-like.

IBL I guess we sold Balogun, Nketiah and Biereth and the next 1 in line was Chido Obi-Martin who chose to go Man U. Although he is too young to have been considered an option this season.

Gabriel up front would mean having to play Kiwior at CB.
Anything is a better option than Sterling though. May aswell be Merino so we don't have to play him in midfield I guess. What a fucking awful summer window.

Regardless of who ends up playing there we have more chance if we at least have 11 than effectively starting with 10 men from kickoff.

I'd rather try Butler Oyedeji at striker. And rotate him with Merino and others. And then keep Trossard, Tierney, Nwaneri and Sterling as wing options. We need a winning formula but we also need to keep our forwards alive so we don't lose more while we nurse Saka and Martinelli back to health.

Trossard false 9. He's quite good there. Shame we don't have any wingers though.

Trossard does seems the best option right now but he definitely will not survive the rest of the season there.... Ethan or Saka (when he is back) would be next in line for me.. Merino would be useless.
