If only that pass to Saka wasn't so behind, the game would have been dusted. He got a lot of license to roam today, which is a privilege he should savour. He's trending in the right direction but he needs to keep off social if he can. Even average performances are going to be ridiculed.

he takes up good positions, but doesn't do a whole lot when he receives the ball. he's too comfortable drifting away from the challenge and laying it off. doesnt turn toward the goal and look to attack with dribbling or passing, unlike trossard for example. also has sketchy passing when he's in the middle third. he's like a diet Kaka

My positivity towards his signing was due to the notion that Chelsea were misusing him as a striker and that deploying him as an attacking midfielder would bring out his best qualities.

However, he appears very passive in possession and doesn't seem to want to create anything through a pass or dribble. Ironically, he actually looks better when he is up front, with his back to goal, laying the ball off to the nearest man.

Looking at his Leverkusen stats, he scored way more goals than he assisted so perhaps he's not a creative player and more of a goalscoring midfielder.

It's one game. I'm old enough (sadly) to have been at Dennis Bergkamp's debut for Arsenal in 1995 and I don't think anyone who was at that game would have come away thinking we had someone on our hands who would spend the next decade becoming an Arsenal legend.

I also thought Havertz did some good things, but I was also screaming for him to be replaced in the last 20.

I’ve said it before but he really reminds me of a bad Ozil, timid, bit lazy and not so proactive.

Chelsea fans are right so far but let’s hope he improves.

Sicario2 - Tier 1 the point is the talent is there. People were raving about this guy at Leverkusen, as they were Dennis at Ajax. One bad transfer doesn't make a bad player, it just means they made the wrong move and now Havertz needs his tires pumped up again. Havertz was probably misused similarly to how Dennis was at Inter as well.
You're talking about the Dennis who left as a club legend, do you remember the "Hartlefool" headlines when he hadn't scored for six weeks, including against the lower league side?

I know he reminds you of Ozil, but that's only a perception, it doesn't mean he is going to be like Ozil. My comparing him to Dennis doesn't mean he's going to be like him either, it just means he needs time. Not everyone hits the ground running.

Main difference with Dennis or even Ode is that they had to adapt to a new league, Havertz doesn’t. That being said, I think it has more to do with confidence than anything else.

Biggest problem with Ozil was his defensive game and they are night and day when it comes to that. Havertz presses, harries and chases back lots. The big bonus there is it means we can afford to let him build up his confidence.

The Ozil comparisons are lazy as hell - the only thing they share is their body frame and nationality. Ozil - even in his later seasons - was more progressive on the ball than Havertz yesterday. But Havertz was much more hard working off the ball.

1) eye test says otherwise. Stats also don’t judge intangible things like body language. He looked timid and played it safe all the time.

2) He reminds me of Ozil in the way he moves and general feeling. Just an observation, hardly the most controversial one.

Mirth the Ozil comparisons are predictable. People just look at a languid body and jump to ridiculous conclusions. Havertz has shown great defensive work and work rate from the front. He’s just not got connections with his teammates yet. Which I wouldn’t expect for several weeks

He's not like Ozil. In fact he's the opposite. Ozil had no fight, he had magic but he was a luxury even at his best. Havertz isn't showing his magic, hopefully he still has it, however what he does have is a bit of graft, more than Ozil ever had. I'll take hard work as the base line, from there he can get the rest back.

He's no Bergkamp either though. We need to be way more realistic than that.

My point about Bergkamp was only that he had a similarly indifferent debut for us, Havertz will have to go some to have half the impact Dennis did for us..

I think for me I'm still unsure what his role is supposed to be for us. Going forwards he looked pretty poor and his running and the way he attacked wasn't effective or direct enough. That chance he got when he was going through was really poor and there was a point he was in the wing and I think Ode had it in the same place near the touchline and he ran behind Ode to the touchline rather then trying to run in front and make an angle. It just looked very ineffective.

Totally accept it's one game and all that but the things he did were consistent with the things that concerned me about the transfer
