Dermot Gallagher is really a retard. Says the VAR can't interfere as they don't want to re-referee that game, but it was a clear mistake and should have been a penalty. But if the ref didn't give it the VAR has to respect his decision.

I think if the ref claims that they clearly saw what happened, then the PL procedures dictate that the call can't be overturned even if they were clearly wrong. This is the thing that Howard Webb criticized about our overturned goal at Old Trafford last season. The ref claimed that he clearly saw the action, so it shouldn't have been overturned for procedural reasons.

DiabyKungFu then why did VAR even look at the situation today before deciding no pen? If they're not to intervene if the ref says he saw the situation, the check in this case is unnecessary and literally pointless.

There's too much subjectivity with VAR. It shouldn't matter if the on field referee saw the situation and decided it was not a foul. He should still be instructed to review the decision. He can then choose to either back his original decision or change his mind. It's so, so stupid especially because every fucking ref has a different interpretation of what it is they are meant to do.

Mirth It just backs up what everyone has said down the years, nothing to do with the resources available but down to sheer incompetency by the refs. Now even with VAR they get decisions wrong. It is an old boys club and there is no accountability.
