Because they hired or integrated a good complement of dynamic, athletic players. Guimarães could have been ours and we'd probable be winning the league just now, yada yada.

But despite all that they're not that good just yet, the gap to us this season is as far as the ground they've covered since PIF bought them with all of its blood-and-oil soaked riyals.

To be fair, they seem like they're quite image conscious and don't want to be seen 'buying' the league. Howe has mentioned a few times about the need for them to comply with FFP.

I don't think we'll win this a draw or defeat for me depending on what type of mood we show up in. Even though the win against Chelsea was nice we still look very vulnerable defensively and Newcastle are a hard working side that Arteta's style has struggled with a bit since Howe came in.

Really don't understand all the fear. We may not win, but we should definitely be going into this as confident we can take the points. We aren't the Arsenal from a few years ago and they aren't peak City or Liverpool.

I can understand it, but I think it's a bit pathetic. Unclear why they wouldn't be the ones fearing us but that's the way the media and fans have shaken this one out apparently.

Big Willie They have a phenomenal home record to be fair. Only lost one since Howe took over, and that's when they went down to 10 man against Liverpool. Its not easy to beat them at St James

It really is. Ok, we've been a bit off it recently, and trying to get our groove back, but people were scared of Newcastle away even when they were on a shit run or results while we were top of the league a couple months ago.

We're scared of losing to those in hot form, we're scared of giving a bounce back result of teams who have super shit form, we're scared of teams who have nothing to play for because they will play us with nothing to lose, we're scared of teams who are fighting the drop or for European places because they'll be up for it and we're scared of City because they have a better squad than us. We are just a bunch of scaredy cats.

I think overall this season we've been courageous but we still haven't shaken this goddamn choker tag and obviously it's all doubled now. Fucking funny though because Newcastle are famously the biggest chokers of the Premier League era when they're not just stinking up the lower leagues. Hope we fuck 'em up anyway.

Agree with the sentiment and I think it's quite disheartening how quickly everyone has forgotten how good we have been this season. Even in the games we dropped points we were very good in periods.

I would have been worried about this game regardless though, simply because their athleticism and work rate, backed up by the home crowd mean it would be an easy one for us to lose control of, and we're not great in games we we can't maintain an element on control. How we pass out the back and retain the ball against their press will be key. If we can bypass it and get the ball to our front boys we'll be golden. If we can't...

goon that's fair. At the same time, the suggestion that they can't compete financially seems a bit off. Being in the CL next season will dramatically increase their capacity to improve their commercial partnerships (etc.) so I'd expect them to start fishing in the superstar pond pretty swiftly. Guimares and Isak are already not far off that level in terms of stature.

Either way, the notion that Newcastle can't compete financially is a bit of a stretch.

Clrnc just back from the gym. One of the personal trainers in there is an Arsenal fan. He asked me, what do you reckon for later? I replied, thought we'd lose yesterday, woken up feeling more confident. Why not?
