Could not agree more. We should not try to be like Brighton. They have a very different operating model top to bottom, and we cannot just lift bits and pieces of it. We have to be the best at competing at the top.

It makes sense to go back in rather than choose the other 2 options.

We have a real chance of winning the league this season. If Partey is out, then I can see us lose quite a few points. Who knows what will happen next year, so I think we need to go all in this season. Overspend. I don't care. Sign someone who can come in and do a good job if/when Partey is out.

Claudius yeah. There's a reason players choose the likes of Dortmund and Brighton, it's because they know they'll get mins and exposure. We're bidding £75m after 2 years of PL experience and we're STILL unable to offer him a starting role for now.

That's not to say there's not good deals to be had though, but as the standards go up it'll be harder to develop these players into desirable end products. I saw Tim Stillman say on twitter, if Sambi went to Brighton he'd potentially be all the rage because they'd have given him the mins and confidence to develop. We can't do that.

goon Also those clubs who sell to Brighton will sell on a lower initial fee on the basis they take a nice cut when sold on. This is why it is more beneficial for them to deal with a selling club rather than us.

I think I posted an article as well about Brighton's dealing over there, it isn't easy or straightforward doing business in South America.

There's something really weird about all this. Brighton keep putting out that he's not for sale and rejecting our bids outright as if we're not even close, and we keep increasing our bids by 5m. Either Edu is hopeless or Brighton is putting up a front in the media and we're aware of it.

There’s so much that’s different about what Brighton are doing.
They are going out and taking less tested players. So their scouts and analysts need to find players nobody else would find. So they are in different places and looking at different models.
And then they give the players time once they arrive. I agree with Stillman that Lokonga (and Vieira) would have much bigger hype at Brighton.
But they are comfortable selling because they don’t have the massive revenue pools from stadium, commercial and europe that we do. So they have to sell these players - and have gotten very good at, marketing, pricing and negotiation
The turnover of players means it is difficult for them to ever build a strong challenger in this league. But they can be just good enough.

Their entire staff is basically positioned to do this. We have to figure out very different issues. Things like how do you go from trying to get 80 points to getting 90 points. That means more star players. Go and buy the best and retain your best. Playing the best means there is little scope for development. Saka/Martinelli/ESR breaking through is an anomaly caused by the squad tanking in addition to those players’ talent. But we should not expect another yield like that in the next 5 years.

QuincyAbeyie or we could just look like we tried. We tried Jesus, Zinchenko, Trossard etc and got them. We seem to have tried Mudryk and failed. I’d be surprised if other non-doping clubs out there have a 100% hit rate on these things.

only virgil is (well was) actually instrumental to his team winning things. the rest were pretty much duds. and we can say big clubs pay big money, but if you made a first XI with those players that would be a bad team. big clubs win because they can afford to keep the players who prove to be instrumental to winning however they got them:cheap find, academy, just below record fees, etc.

Remember when Liverpool bought VVD. His price doubled. They really wanted him, pissed off his club with the pursuit but went all in because he would be a finishing piece. They were laser focused on who they wanted. Every analyst on TV eg Neville, Shearer, Ferdinand etc lost their mind saying that was a ridiculous overpayment. Worked out.

I would be far more worried about Wenger and Emery spending £70m than I am Arteta and Edu. They have a clear, understandable plan. They’re less likely to just buy a big name, and will likely know how the player fits their jigsaw puzzle.

And when Pool got Virgil, they’d already started a cheap foundation of Salah, Robertson, Mane, Trent etc. sound familiar?
