Lol, It's never personal. Similar to Ramsdale, Ben White, Zinchenko, Partey, Xhaka, and now Havertz/Jesus. If you want to be elite, you have to seek improvement in all areas you can.

Martinelli is a decent player. He is also, currently, the obvious "weak link", ie position where we can make the greatest improvement. I would rather keep and push him down the pecking order, but if we have to sell, I want to get the most we can get out of the transaction.

The weak link is at striker. I'm all for improvement, even if it's over Saka, but the LW players we've been linked to are competition and depth for Gabby, rather than clear upgrades.

I think part of the problem is the way we play, he's not the type of wide player to go 1v1 and burn the full back, he is however very good at making great runs and when he is 1v1 with the keeper he is deadly but we hardly ever pick him out.

Sure, but you're comparing Martinelli to Martinelli.

There's not many wingers who can beat a man 1v1 from a standing start.

Since teams sit back against us so deep they often double mark our widemen. So it's a standing start 1 v 2 it's incredibly difficult.

When steams started doing this his numbers go bad. But he's actually improved if you put him in the kinda space he used to have he'd get more than he did then.

The system is contingent on having wingers who can beat their man. Hell, what is a winger if he can't consistently beat most fullbacks on any given matchday. I've given Martinelli even rope to rationalise his downturn, but he's no longer even maximising opportunities when he does get inside or has space to take a shot.

Even the best wingers beat their man less than 50% of the time. Its just no realistic to expect a winger to consistently beat their man.

Coombs We need the Martinelli over 3 seasons ago not this current one. Saka has pushed on but Martinelli has probably gone backwards. Hence why we are looking at options in his position.

Meatwad hard to cut inside when nobody is ever outside of you. Easier to defend. Saka has support runs.

beating his defender 1v1 consistently would be good, but what's really hampering him is that he's a right footed left winger who can't cut in and curl one in. if teams feared him cutting in onto his right foot and letting one rip he would have an easier time against his primary defender. right now they just jockey him down the line and maybe he gets lucky and a trick comes off, but that's few and far between.

I just want Martinelli to back up a new guy and possibly also back up Saka. Trossard can go in such case if we need to sell, although I'd prefer him to stick around and cover a bunch of positions.

Replacing Trossard raises the floor (a bit). Replacing Martinelli raises the ceiling a bit.

We should be looking for ceiling raisers.

-- my thinking is what QuincyAbeyie said. If replacing Trossard results in Martinelli being benched, we've done very well. Even if it mounts more of a challenge to Martinelli and he kicks on into higher gear, we've done well. Trading Gabby for someone who might be slightly better than him once they've bedded in is not going to move the needle.

Replacing Martinelli with a bona fide superstar player, like Kvara, Vini, Mbappe, or if a gamble on someone basically at his level now really paid off big time, then sure. But that's not really indicative of a major weakness in the squad, and its not something you can really plan for or predict. Just gotta make the best signings you can and hope for the best.
