I really don’t want us to open this window to Saudi league money. I remember when we sold out first players to City and everyone was calling them stupid for overpaying for our players. Within years, they’d taken note of our players and we had helped legitimise City as a top club. Let Chelsea or United sell their top players to Saudi. Not us please

Daddy Walmart didn't make his billions by listening to the pleas of online fans. If the money is good enough, he's as good as gone. I anticipate he opened up the lines of communication with them as a negotiating tactic. I am on board with making him our highest paid defender, maybe even highest paid player, period, if that's what it takes to keep him. If he's still bucking after that, take the cash and go pick up some other solid center back. They aren't as hard to find as attacking positions.

Sicario2 I don't think anyone wants to sell him but if they are offering him €20m a year tax free Gabriel needs to think about that, that kind of money is transformational even for someone well paid like him. He stays out for a few years he'll make more money in that time then he would in his entire career otherwise.

We'll have to relax about it as there will be a fair bit more of this in years to come. We've got a core of very good, renowned players.

It creates that unpleasant anxious feeling, but it's normal and fine for Gabriel's team to use interest from other clubs as leverage in his renegotiation.

Sicario2 If we pay him £250k a week for the next 3 years he'll make around £20m, if that Saudi figure is correct he'll make £50m. We can all sit here on our keyboards and say we'd do it for the badge etc but that is serious money man.

The intangible benefits of staying pure to your legacy, achieving club legend status, continuing to live in one of the best cities in the world and having the respect of the football world should be worth a lot.

If Gabriel won the league or CL with us that’s priceless for him, his career and how he will he remembered.

I don't agree with that, that's extra £30m he'd make in three years. He probably hasn't made £30m (after tax) in his whole career. I'm not saying it is right but I get why he would consider it. I've also found people who come from poverty have a very different outlook on life and money.

He won't be getting that kind of money when he is 35, they are paying over the odds for star players now not over the hill players.

If Gabriel gets a sniff we're ready to let him go, or gets offended and properly unsettled, we're in trouble. Madrid making him plan B after they give up on Saliba might be more of a threat than PIF sweeping him off to Saudi Arabia. They're not the only ones either.

My hunch is it's an ambitious summer signing star forwards that will keep these star defenders interested in Arsenal.
