We missed on the former duo (players refused to move) and sealed the deal on the latter. There’s nothing wrong with that. I am not a fan of the Sterling deal, but it made sense - established pl quality, even if in the twilight years of his career, for cheap, not a permanent deal... I mean, that’s not a bad deal however you slice it.

We have coped well with set backs in general, but the injury to Odegaard is starting now to hit hard. And Arteta hasn’t had the courage or confidence to play nwaneri in there.

Claudius their problem is never talent identification. They are great at it.

Their problem is managers previously who all want different players. Now Maresca has got them playing coherently.

When their Paraguayan Ecuador and Brazilian wonder kids come next year they will be pretty scary

Claudius Nico Williams is at 0.38 npxG + xAG this season, down from 0.46 last season. Which isn’t very impressive when we consider that Martinelli is sitting at 0.57 for both seasons despite all the criticism we give him. Nico does have incredible dribbling / take on stats, but he’s not the end product monster folks are crying for right now.

Elliot on the ArsenalVision pod was pretty convinced that even if we'd signed Nico this summer, he'd have been playing back up to Martinelli. I know that's just one guys opinion, but it strikes me that you'd want more than just back up for the amount of Euro it would take for Athletic to part with him. Much as I would love us to sign a Williams.

You can't really give much credence to these straight-up stats comparisons.

Martinelli's end product would change dramatically if we made tactical changes that suited his game more. And if Williams came here and Martinelli had a bad run and got dropped, we'd get to see what Williams is made of.

I say that as someone who's sceptical that Martinelli's easy to upgrade.

If we want to strengthen our current attack, we'll need a leap of faith and insight. One of Martinelli, Havertz or Saka would be being upgraded, and everything rationally says all three are very hard to improve on, even if most would say Gabi is the easiest.

There's no guarantee signing Gyökeres or Šeško improves on anyone we have for example.

Burnwinter I also quote the stats having watched a fair amount of Williams both this season and last season. He’s not this automatic scorer. If I wanted a scorer, I’d sooner Diaz from Liverpool for the left flank. He’s less heralded but has a pace, directness and desire you don’t see in the other two. He won’t match Williams for dribbling wizardry and dribbling stats. But he will drive to goal.

I’m actually struggling to think who the standouts are in the league above Martinelli other than Son who’s an all-timer. It’s guys like Doku, Grealish, Rashford, Sancho, Diaz, Mitoma, Ramsey.

Signings improve the players you've already got, as well. Or they usurp them. Signing someone (Sterling) that everyone knows threatens nothing is counter productive in that he doesn't improve them team either way.

Our attack is very effective in goldilocks situations. It was the same last season, and we managed to get it just right for that stretch of games after Dubai. It cost us the title, in the end, and now we've regressed. If we couldn't find anyone to replace ESR and Nelson, we shouldn't have let them go.

Coombs Yes I am not saying there's no point signing Gyökeres or Šeško. What you notice with top clubs is that they quite often sign "flops" but their output remains at a very high level.

Someone like Grealish at City would be an example of this.

While we are talking Real Madrid, one more prospect who could be interesting for L8 in future. Nico Paz went to Como and is playing really well there. Great close control. Looks like a Barca mid. Has also already debuted for Argentina at 20

Exactly who I had in mind. You need a couple of slightly bitter, high profile, even world class players on the threshold of the core group.

Coombs you’d kill Arteta if he blew £100m on a 5 goal guy. Look at how much he’s criticised for retaining Jesus who cost£40m. And all these United forwards for example -, Zirkzee, Hojlund, Antony (and Sancho before). Again, these are all £65-70m guys.

Claudius how many goals do you get from Havertz, how badly do you suffer with injuries, how much more strongly can you finish games, how much more flexible in a tight schedule, how many more systems can you play? It's not about 5 goals or 15, it's about having a better team that can compete across all competitions. I'm the last guy that'll kill a manager for spending money.

Also, criticizing retaining a player has nothing to do with their price. Should have sold Jesus, but I'd never say he shouldn't have bought him to begin with.

Claudius that's not the correct thing to judge on. There's no reason why they cannot perform better here. Havertz is the best example.

Look at all the Chelsea players under Maresca. They didn't suddenly all become better overnight

Jesus's wages are a much bigger problem than his fee. United are terrible in that regard of course—we generally do okay and we only have a couple of millstone fading players like Jesus at the moment.

Burnwinter United make way more money than everyone else so they can afford those wages. They just need to accept that and start eating wages when things don't work out.

Claudius don't think United are wrong to sign players who aren't ready. Thats where they are as a club now. They need to build it up and signing young prospects is a good route for them. No top player is moving to United these days and they're better off with young hopefuls than more Casmeiro, Varane, Mount, etc types.
