samthegooner It may be my baby brain after having spent the last week with our second newborn but I’m really starting to settle on the feeling that if we want someone to take us to that next-level “inevitable” type of club, I think it has to be someone like Wirtz/Musiala/Kvara. Even if that means we only bring in a player or two next year. One of those guys plus Sesko and I trust Arteta to figure it all out. I still think we’d need another midfielder especially if Partey and Jorginho leave but I think Nwaneri can do the job in the attacking midfield roles and Lewis-Skelly can do it in a more defensive oriented role (in addition to our current options). Add one of those 3 and then Sesko and we are an absolute force going forward while maintaining our OOP dominance.

Congrats on the newborn, hope child and mother are doing well.

Nico Williams is at 0.38 npxG + xAG this season, down from 0.46 last season. Which isn’t very impressive when we consider that Martinelli is sitting at 0.57 for both seasons despite all the criticism we give him. Nico does have incredible dribbling / take on stats, but he’s not the end product monster folks are crying for right now.

Elliot on the ArsenalVision pod was pretty convinced that even if we'd signed Nico this summer, he'd have been playing back up to Martinelli. I know that's just one guys opinion, but it strikes me that you'd want more than just back up for the amount of Euro it would take for Athletic to part with him. Much as I would love us to sign a Williams.

Claudius as has been mentioned in this thread, I think that's not a totally fair comparison based on the relative teams/circumstances they are in. Additionally the aspect I liked about Williams was his directness his ability to try and take on and beat defenders to pull them out of their set lines and take some of the attention off the right flank and Saka. I think something like that could be a major uplift even if the goals output from them individually might not always be great.

I'm not saying Williams is a guaranteed thing but your going to have to take a chance on those types of players with the right age profile and assess them to try and mitigate as much as reasonable how you value them but we aren't going to be competing with the top tier "as near guaranteed players" so we will need to do that kind of business.

Looking at martinelli over the past 2 seasons I don't think he would be on the list for players I would feel were going to help us take that step to the title if he wasn't at arsenal.

20 year old Spanish striker at Porto. Still a bit raw, but has good strength, power. Runs, heads, puts himself about. Could be worth taking a risk on as Havertz’s understudy

And Seskos and Zubimendis and Merinos and Calafioris Our profile is clear. Established quality or hot young stuff. We missed on the former duo (players refused to move) and sealed the deal on the latter. There’s nothing wrong with that. I am not a fan of the Sterling deal, but it made sense - established pl quality, even if in the twilight years of his career, for cheap, not a permanent deal... I mean, that’s not a bad deal however you slice it.

We have coped well with set backs in general, but the injury to Odegaard is starting now to hit hard. And Arteta hasn’t had the courage or confidence to play nwaneri in there.
