I'd love to see us go for Caqueret at 8 to replace Xhaka. I think he will give us most of what Xhaka does and adds a little more on-the-ball ability.

I reckon it's his intelligence and understanding. The problem ESR and Vieira have when they play there is that they don't know how to get involved and how to get the ball in good areas. Xhaka's movement, timing, awareness and positioning is second to none. It's why he's always involved whichever position he plays. There's absolutely nothing else about him that makes him suited to the 8 role.

There is, and it’s a huge quality. His ability to play first time passes in and around the box. He’s opened up some many goal scoring situations through keeping moves moving at a fast pace in the final third. He’s great as using as a wall or to feed overlapping runners.

The danger of getting someone who is maybe more technical on the ball, is that you run the risk of over complicating things and slowing moves down too much

If I thought he should move to 8, I'd play ESR for half a season out on the left in a squad role. I'd tell him to focus on covering his LB, cutting inside for 1-2s with the CF, and making late runs into the box. Kind of like how Ramsey played wide right. Could be useful in tight away games when rotation is called for.

I'm not as worried about the DM aspects of Xhaka's game for our future 8 as I am about their ability to cover the touchline and accelerate the tempo in tight spaces high up the pitch simultaneously. Emile is also quite physical these days.

Meatwad I'd say Thuram for the Partey role (as the understudy) and Caqueret for Xhaka's (could be immediate or over time).

If we currently don't have the depth to compete in both EL and PL and Arteta has done right in not rotating because we don't have good enough players, one transfer is certainly not all we need.
