Even at his best, I always thought he was a terrible all-round goalkeeper, albeit for a time, an elite shot-stopper.
The guy doesn't have a clue how to catch a cross, command his box, or organise a defence. He's one of worst "top" keepers in that regard I've come across in my time watching football. That's without mentioning his truly awful distribution and complete inability to play as a front-footed sweeper keeper, but these are more modern requirements and not as important as the other stuff I mentioned.
I have always used De Gea as a barometer to gauge how much I reckon a football fan I come across knows about goalkeeping! 🙃
