There's something diffident and half-arsed about the way PIF steers Newcastle, partly because the glory days of "financial doping" are over, partly because they're distracted by the literal nation-building project of the SPL. They won't be up there this season.

Good point. However I think there's also a good chance he has a decent-ish first season, kinda like Højlund who scored 16 goals in 23/24, but will struggle once it becomes clear that "being a talent" is not enough to carry a team upwards in the table. The pressure and negativity then keep mounting and they end up reaching levels where they'd break any 22 year old. United keep repeating these mistakes: how many young players have they signed and grinded down mentally until they've become shadows of their former selves?

Unlike us I think they need someone to steady the ship for a few years to give them time to rebuild. Someone like Mateta or Watkins would make more sense to me than Sesko from that perspective.

United will have a decent attack this season. Cunha, Mbuemo, Amad and Bruno are decent and know the league. They will be able to feed a new striker.

It's the defence and deeper midfield that will still be the issue for them.

United will turn the corner when they stop converting elite talents (Sancho, Rashford et al.) into midtable misfits and stop paying elite fees for midtable talents.

It's obviously a bit rough (this tabulation lets us off easy for what we paid for Havertz, Vieira, White, Zinchenko among others), but there's been an obscene amount of value appreciation in our squad due to the conditions we've been creating, from Hale End through to the first XI.

United: Antony, Onana, Højlund, Zirkzee, Mount, Maguire … they've been recruiting like absolute idiots for pretty much a decade. I'm not even counting bizarre decisions like signing Casemiro for £60m at the age of 30.

RowJimmy it's a good attack, good enough to compete for a CL spot. Like Asterix said, it's the rest of the team that will let them down.

And I've caught a bit of their pre-season and am watching them now, they look fitter than they have in the past. I am reasonably certain that they'll finish between 4th and 7th this year.

Mancs have had a slipshod recruitment strategy but the players they've signed were not awful by any means. They just became shite at the club. Clearly a training/culture problem.

I think this is the natural development arc of most players. Strasbourg - Chelsea - Strasbourg - Chelsea - Arsenal.

Every summer there is a lot of talk but nothing ever happens. Do teams have any reservations when it comes to him? Or why does no one pull the trigger?

So Liverpool will spend 150 on Isak and then get a defender as well? On top of what they already spent?

Now whoever signs him will have to pay both his previous and new agent fees. Until his previous deal runs out which theirs no way is in the middle of a transfer window.

Even though we hate to admit it Man Utd still have a good pull, they can't compete with the current elite clubs but can financially outmuscle others and have a much bigger name which attracts players.

It's nuts that PSR is making Newcastle sell star yous players to be more sustainable. But it also means they can't sheel out the wages to keep top players. It's just protecting the elites. I don't actually care as we're on the good side of it. But it's daft.

That's exactly what it is. It prevents clubs from breaking into that elite group. I'm not against it given the impact City and Chelsea had on Arsenal, but from a fairness and objective pov, it's a cartel move.

Klaus There were rumours he wanted a release clause put in his contract, the boy I hear about their conduct the more I am believing this. Arsenal quite right to just walk away from this kind of nonsense. He has the potential to be a top footballer but this isn't the second coming of Marco Van Bastan....
