Agreed, should just funnel those funds to a CM like Enzo. There are alterative wingers/strikers options out there. Should look to getting Marcus Thuram as a cheap alternative.

The player came was a bit like Pepe for me in that I don't really know anything about him apart from the buzz around them so I can't really speak to what we are missing out on. But it's not like he was committed to us, he was doing all this stuff to get himself a move and we seemed to be the club in and around. But there was always a risk another comes in and as much as a mess as Chelsea are and that certainty are they have had periods before where they were pretty chaotic only to eventually come through. So that aspect, with being in London and clearly a team willing to spend big and give you good wages but that surprising.

Worry for me is we do need some other options in the forwards area so hopefully we have some other targets.

They might well, but Chelsea can't buy every player, so ultimately the prices come down.

If we were ahead of it we could have gone harder and earlier for Mudryk, tried to force it in summer. The £27m for Saliba is a decent example of how to do business in this environment.

The aspects to be regretted about this transfer are that Mudryk was the right age to be developed in an Arsenal mentality and football, and had the right elite physical attributes. The other regret is that he'll be wasted at Chelsea. We can find targets to match him otherwise.

Hopefully we move quickly with a backup plan. Wouldn't mind Zaha for short term.

Yeah, have to say I would've liked to see him actually go on strike, but seems he's too much of a good boy.

Zaha would be an annoying player to have to have on the books within a year, but from now till June I reckon he'd do as much for us as Mudryk would have.

I would pay much more for Mudryk than Gakpo. Simple reason. When I look at skill (receiving, turning, dribbling), Mudryk is much better than Gakpo. And then Mudryk is possibly the fastest forward with the ball in Europe. These two aspects make Mudryk significantly more valuable than Gakpo. Gakpo has no extreme attributes that would make him tough for a Premier League defender to stop. So I would expect some separation in pricing. But not €100m

One of the biggest reasons imo Arteta got rid of Pepe was his lack of defensive workrate. I think Zaha would be as bad and can't see him changing at this stage in his career.

The system we have doesn't allow for passengers, also dunno if it is just me but I quite like our current policy of mainly signing under 25 players who have room to grow.

JazzG -- I think Zaha would be fine defensively if he was on a short contract (loan, or a 2 year contract). Arteta would be able to keep him motivated for that long, and he'll be a rotational player so he should maintain his legs. He also has good physicality so the issue is primarily in his effort, not his effort and frame (Pepe wasn't incredibly weak).

MistaT I’m not so sure he would be up for the hard work required in this current team. He’s at a team where the system is built around him doing well and isolating their fullbacks. Probably wants a big payday as well at this stage of his career.

Clrnc From what was on Twitter yesterday sounds like they had a higher guaranteed amount and Chelsea’s addons were much more easily achievable. You can’t blame Shakhtar for taking the bigger bid, they dragged this out long enough to get another club interested.

Sometimes you can be a victim of your own success, no doubt with recent transfers working out well and being top of the league may have encouraged Chelsea to go all out for him.

Reality is if the players is extremely successful nobody cares about the price.

Fair play to Mudryk, he even double check if we are going to match Chelsea bid before signing.

Tactical perhaps? I was wondering we'd pushed the Félix barrow to entice Chelsea to swoop in, perhaps we started doing the same with this guy once they barged into the picture.

Surely Chelsea are not gonna try to sign whoever our next forward target is. 🙃

@MistaT Doubt Zaha would accept either a loan or a 2 year contract. He's at that stage where he wants a lot of things that don't quite fit together for any Arsenal future: 3+ year contract, high wages, to be a "main character" in the squad. Not gonna happen here.

Wouldn't mind signing him today, but it'd be on the expectation we disappointed him pretty badly before long.

Meanwhile, those pesky pessimistic stats guys are happy because they think this one would've been a mistake:

The best case is maybe top 5 winger type, the worst case is he washes out and ends up at a Championship level club.

Dunno if that's true to be honest, but it's not too bad to have a counter-narrative out there after Chelsea have routed us in the market twice in a handful of days.
