A super league remains a long way off and might take some strange, Frankenstein's monster form, but I think it'll definitely happen. Money has inexorably driven every other development in football, much as we've just been discussing here.

It’s not happening as a full breakaway. Maybe as an on top of the premier league. Here’s why

premier league generates so much money. To break away from the premier league, you need to guarantee the premier league club as much as it’s making from the premier league and champions league combined. The business case for Juve or Milan is very easy. Not so easy for Spurs or Arsenal. So the English teams will try to have both domestic and foreign
threats to players. Uefa and fifa can impose penalties on players in a full breakaway scenario, including expulsion from other competitions. Even if the super league lawyers get around this by applying competition / anti-trust law, the clubs will then have to redo every single player’s contract to reflect this new non-Uefa reality
practicality for fans. It’s one thing to go to a couple of European nights a season. It’s impossible for the away fans to be off to Amsterdam, Madrid and Rome every other weekend
and then if it’s a closed league, the EU will have to get involved because the clubs will be setting up a cartel. EU is very much against cartel and monopolistic behavior unlike America, so a super league would get lots of legal scrutiny. What mechanisms would that Super League make to ensure local competition, new entrants, ensuring that there is no price gouging of fans, City councils etc.? All the distortions you see in American sports.

I don't know the figures but the problem is over time these deals are over time becoming actual reality. In the last five seasons City have won four league titles and reached at least the CL quarter finals including a runners up medal. That's plenty of money to fill the coffers of the club with even if Abu Dhabi funding was there first, money begets money.

As for the ESL if anything the ones who think it won't happen are hopeful. All arguments you've listed were common knowledge when the first rumours surfaced and still twice they've now tried to breakaway. It's not a question of if but when it'll happen I reckon.

That's the worrying thing. Once the system is fixed (if ever) City have already grown to such a size that they won't even need cheating anymore to reach that kind of revenue. You can stop new City's from happening in the future, but the ship has sailed when it comes to stopping them. I assume plenty of kids are growing up as City fans at the moment.

All the kids outside the UK will grow up as City fans. That’s for sure.
But that story about the dodgy betting site shows the extent to which City is financially doping. It’s not clear if a player like Haaland is only making £350k or as much as £800k after bonuses. If it’s the latter, that’s £40m a year for one player. It needs to be paid. And a half empty stadium can only get you so far. So you make up sponsors on top of your national airline that already gives an absurd sponsorship. The FA doesn’t give a shit.

Nope. This analysis, though compelling in its articulation as usual from you Claude, definitely isn't the be-all and end-all, there are solid critiques or refutations of every point you've made.

In general, you're underestimating the capacity of groups of interests to negotiate complexity when there's money to be made. That's how the leagues got commercialised, why the Champions League has its present bloated format, how the Premier League happened, how these complex multi-broadcaster TV rights packages happen, how the relegation parachute payments happen, how the sponsorship arrangements happen and territorialise the drinks, kits, stadia, training kits, buses, you name it of every club, and individual star players … the problems, complexities and intricate networks of interests and obstacles in the existing situation are already a testament to how a super league is possible, not impossible.

It'd make a fortune and the upsides would be unthinkably vast, so I reckon it'll eventually happen in some form.
