Not sure about that, I don't think their team is anything special. I reckon a strong top half of the table finish is the best they can hope for but I don't think that's a bad thing either from their POV.

Glad to see them trying to abide by FFP.

Top half is what I see for them too. I also think Howe is an average coach and gets too much credit for their turnaround last season. Given the atmoaphere up there with Mike Ashley and Steve Bruce, the club was always going on a big upward turn the moment that energy changed, add the new players to that and I think Alan Pardew would have done something similar.

So, I don't think they'll get to top 4 challenging level until they get a better manager and add a lot more good players.

They were certainly very very impressive on opening day too. If they get the striker and winger they want they will be dangerous.

Jury is still out on Howe but his team's turnaround and performance stats bodes very very well. The way he changed their playing style in no time without many new signings is certainly impressive too. If he can finish top 6 this year he is a proven good manager in my book.

Think Howe is being underrated a lot.

yeah Howe did a solid for the northern barcodes.

At the very least created a team that not only actually tries to play football, but also believes that they can. Of course having Guimaraes there helps loads.

There was a wave of optimism and confidence when he joined though, new manager bounce x new owner bounce and all that. I can't see them maintaining that sort of form, and that's more a reflection on the players than Howe.

We looked absolutely horrid in the run that led to Emery being sacked. Opposition was having over 20 shots every game. Worst Arsenal run I have seen. The players had completely stopped playing. The side didn't exactly set the world on fire but we stabilized performances and results. Won the FA Cup too beating City and Chelsea.

To be fair to Emery in that torrid run he got 19 points from the 15 games. Arteta got 26 points from his first 15 games. Not much of a bounce.

Newcastle got 7 points in their first 14 games, Howe took over the same team and they have 24 points from the next 14. That's a proper bounce.

Exactly, our first half season under Arteta was nowhere near a bounce. Covid happened to be fair but while we looked a lot better defensively we basically stopped scoring, definitely not as good as a year before under Emery which would be the threshold for a real bounce imo

Arteta did a good job of stopping the ship from sinking. He also impressed me hugely with the way he stabilised the team defensively so quickly - he didn't come in and immediately start trying to play like City or Barcelona, he was smart enough to know he needed to come up with a tactical system that could get the hot mess of a team he inherited through the season (and beyond actually, such was the state of things). That he had the chops 10 seconds into his management career to find the right tactical system to outfox some very good teams and win the FA Cup - with the bunch of undesirables we had back then - is still pretty astounding to me.

Sinking? we finished 5th with Emery, and then 8th and 8th with Arteta (the first 8th, admittedly, half Arteta and half Emery). Seems more like stabilizing into mediocrity to me

I think it went beyond a bounce. I think Howe is a very good manager, he showed that plenty at Bournemouth too. Plus they added some quality players, Bruno Guimaraes is a genuine level raiser, especially when they already had talent like ASM, Joeliton, Almiron, Willock, etc Plus they added solid players like Trippier, Wood and Burn. Howes done a great job and they've invested sensibly, its more than just new manager bounce, that doesn't last 25 games.
