If you look at our side and summer spending in a vacuum, you would think we are on course to do really well this season. But then looking at Chelsea and Tottenham lineup today, I don't see us having any discernible edge in terms of personnel or manager. Our best hope is the youthfulness of the squad somehow being an advantage and it's growing chemistry. I think it's going to be another slog for top four which is just shit.

We have stability, and we have some of the best talent in the league. We have also have an extremely passionate and supportive fanbase.

When you spend the sort of money and make the sort of decisions we have been making since Arteta came in, there really can be no excuses. Last term some of us thought we could and should have done it, while others thought we were ahead of schedule. We have improved on the team, and look likely to invest a bit more. At this stage we definitely should have the personnel required (quality and squad size-wise) to make it back into the champions league. If we don't then we know exactly where the problem lies, don't we?

He included the manager in our 'lacking an edge' though so your point about 'where the problem lies' is a little moot.

But yeah I think we have a clear edge for all the reasons you mentioned. Spurs have Kane and Son and that sort of quality does provide a big advantage, but I think even last year we looked a better or at least a more rounded team. That one may be tight. Chelsea look a real mess to me, I don't think they've added much to the team at all this window. It'll be a bad season in my books if we finish behind them.

Yeah. I think on our 4th season if we are still trotting our the excuses early we really deserves all the failures that happen to us, especially after being the highest spender again for the 4th consecutive year. I am sure there are still people who thinks give it another season because this is not Arteta's team etc but really there shouldn't be any excuses.

Re Chelsea, I don’t think it’s wise to judge them right now. The season is long, and a decent spell of form and anyone can be right in the mix. They have always had a strong squad, and they have a new owner throwing cash around. Eventually they will turn some heads and convince them to join their “project”. I’m sure Leicester won’t be able to resist the money on offer for Fofana for example. I have no clue where Man U stands right now, so yeah the early bets will be on City, Liverpool, Tottenham and ourselves, probably in that order too. Then we shall see how the season pans out, and especially how a mid season World Cup in bloody Qatar affects each team. You have to think those teams with larger squads/ less representatives there will have an advantage. I still can’t believe that nonsense is going ahead by the way.

We also have European football to contend with now. Remains to be seen how we juggle the rigours of the Thursday-Sunday schedule. In the past: badly.

Sadly we're finishing behind the Scum again because for some reason they're able to hang on to those two dickheads until they retire.

Unless of course we actually go and buy more attacking quality this window, because we're superior to them in all the other areas of the pitch.

Our best shot is a dodgy Chelsea.

Guess his energy helps with that.

Suarez was jammy as well, less so with his end produc and more with how he carries the ball. His dribbling always looked out if control but somehow the ball always bkunced off defenders legs back to him. Quality finisher though.
