Cult hero of the year: Smith-Rowe or Ramsdale. Would arguably have been Eddie though if we had reached Champions League. No one knew where we'd even buy a goal from when he came into the side.
Signing of the year: Tomiyasu by a country mile.
Save of the year: That Leno one.
Heartbreak of the year: The run-in.

I'd add a "Most improved player" award and give it to either Smith-Rowe or Eddie.

I'd have it as a tie between Arteta and the BoD/KSE decision makers for getting the season 'wrong' from before it started.
And I don't buy the 'excuse' about not signing/loaning players in Jan & 'waiting for Mr Right' = what will they do in a similar scenario this summer?

Beating United and Chelsea in the space of the week should have been so memorable, and sadly it just doesn't feature the way things panned out.
Villian of the year is close one between Xhaka/Arteta/Refs. All three really really fucked us over. At least Arteta also had positive influences.
Tomiyasu would have been a strong candidate for signing of the year if he didn't miss half a season. Ødegaard if it counts would be mine.

Agree. The reason Goodison Park away is worst than St.James Park away is because Everton were absolutely awful, we had practically our strongest lineup out. As it turned out, the very next game a week later would act as the turning point for this squad, starting to figure out how to work out of press and be more confident in its own abilities.

Refs at this point are a given, we should've been in the CL last year if it weren't for the horrible decisions we've suffered (Wolves Leicester United etc) and this year probably too (Spurs away, City at home etc). Was the same under Wenger we'd always have a good 5-10 matches per season where we'd have to play 12 men, probably won't ever change. We need to give us the best chance of succeeding despite the PGMOL, and that's not by sticking with and doubling down on your mistakes.

I agree, have to assume its something we have to deal with and assume its not going anywhere. You'd agree its never been this bad though? It feels like it by some distance, and that Spurs game was not football, it was designed entertainment. Hopefully theres a reason a bunch of these guys are retiring this summer. The Spurs game was outrageous but don't think I'd say it's never been this bad. Early noughties were definitely worse, every game vs United especially but also Chelsea even before the takeover or Spurs, Bolton or Blackburn etc we'd always get shafted. Just think of that Riley performance at OT

I'd forgotten we scored that one and just looked it up. That was fantastic. First Pepé's nutmeg and then Eddie's nonchalant finish with a backheel.

If only those two had stayed in the team after that performance.

Hope Marseille manage to land him somehow along with Saliba, I'll just follow them next season then until Arteta manages to manage himself out of the job.

5m loan + 5m obligation should do the trick.

Agreed.
IMO we consistently leave too much off the table when planning our objectives on and off the pitch each season, and in doing so we dumb it down to the minimum requirements and then plan on achieving that.
IMO it was one of the worst traits of AW's management in that he always talked in terms of only needing X points to finish in top4, and he basically dismissed any talk of doing any better than that. He also said he refused to consider any other objective in the seasons until top4 had been retained. Even when we dropped out of top4 he was talking of only needing 1-2 points to regain it again. Similarly when we finished 2nd to LCFC he talked about that being an improvement, despite the 10 point gap and that our points total had actually dropped.
