10 reasons why the glass is half full

I know we are all pissed off how the season ended, myself included.

However, not all is doom and gloom:

1) We finished with 69 points, last two seasons that would have got us top 3.

2) 22 wins which is more than Chelsea and only 4 less than our invincible season

3) There is a much higher chance we will stay in Europe longer than Spurs

4) The connection between the match going fans and the club is the best I’ve ever seen it in the Emirates era. The toxic era is long gone. Massive ‘culture shift’

5) We can only get better with such a young group of players and a few right additions

6) The way we lost 4th spot can be used as motivation going into next season. If we finished 4th we may have been complacent.

7) William Saliba is back. We will sign a WC striker. More deadwood should be out of the squad and hopefully no more of Wenger’s players will be left

8) Arteta now has 2.5 years of experience under his belt, no longer a rookie manger. He will have learnt from his mistakes

9) Our players could win a major trophy in the middle of the season. Imagine the confidence and stature Saka could have if he returns as a World Cup winner

10) Europa League will give some of your next-gen players (ie Patino) a chance to play whereas CL wouldn’t have given them this opportunity

I've got no issue really with people choosing to focus on positives if that's what they want to do. But please explain no. 3 to me because (other than the fact we all hate spurs) I cant see why you'd be so certain about that.

For how long? It’s a product of having players like Saka and ESR. Academy kids who we don’t see as mercenaries and who are performing. That can change very easily if we aren’t careful.

On a serious note, the upside is the same as it was going into last season, namely that we have a squad full of talent that just needs the right application and enough opportunities to develop.

I don't know if Eddie is going to stay on or not, but I reckon the lesson he has taught us lately is to stop dealing in half-measures. Dare to back the young and hungry players over the old and busted. Be brave.

I think we should back him over any half-wits like Gabriel Jesus this summer too. Go for a proper striker and, if we can't find one, back the lad we've produced instead. Don't clog up the squad with more crap that comes with massive wages and transfer fees. Be brave in the market too. Spend the money on midfield and the fullback positions if we can't find the right quality to put up front. We would have been in Champions League right now if Eddie had been our second choice striker going into this season, that's the long and short of it really. We can get there next year with him up top, but we can't do it with Tierney playing 52% of all games. We can't do it with Xhaka in midfield and Cedric at right-back.

and lets not forget.. We can't do it without Partey being healthy and fit for the vast majority of the season

Yep, that's another argument for going all-in for a top class midfielder. We have to have another one. The supply up the field can't stop as soon as Partey gets injured or marked out of a game. That makes us way too vulnerable.

If we keep Eddie we still need a striker though. We started this season with Auba, Laca and Eddie. We can't start next with just Eddie.

Good thread, there are a few debatable points but they are, at least, debatable.

I'd be inclined to agree with (3) over the next 2–3 seasons because Spurs are dependent on Kane and Son and are otherwise quite brittle.

(6) well that's a bit empty, (7) well that remains to be seen, (8) I think we won't see that much improvement or growth from Arteta as a manager, and (9) is actively a negative, more likely our players get distracted or injured by World Cup stuff than that it does us any good.

Overall though, there's clearly room for improvement, even a strong likelihood of improvement. I do believe there's plenty in the glass.
