Sounds like justification from people who didn't rate him in the past who want to start resting him now. Thry can't just rate him without retrofitting some error prone Gabriel in the past to make it seem he was shit then and is now one of the best. He's now older, with more experience but making him seem to be some error prone defender who suddenly turned it all around is mad.
I can create compilations of miscontrols from Saliba from the last season or 2 which were capitalised on. Should you then post a video saying "damn, he's regressed so much"?
You can make a similar compilation over the last season or 2 of a mis control here or there by Gabriel that was picked up by the opposition, only difference is we don't have a gaping hole on our left as much as we did with Zinchenko so the team can recover. Plus Gabriel was one of Arteta's first signings, back then he was playing with guys like Holding, Cedric etc. It's like trying to be Lewis Hamilton in a full clown car.
Our team as a whole has improved defensively by the way we are coached and set up. Gabriel has always been a leader on the pitch for us since at least 2022. People are only rating him so much now because
- He's part of the strongest defence (which he heavily contributes to but is a team effort), and
- He scores so damn much from set plays.
I think 2. especially is where so much of his hype is coming from these days. Our set piece domination and his ability to get on the end of things.
