It's only my opinion, I agree it's too early to say for sure. Although, it's not like Martinez has been great for years either.
Martinez is a really good keeper, like you say, his penalty stopping is top notch and he has great handling. I really like the command he has of his area too - an area I would say he his comfortably the best in the League at. But I also think he lets too many shots in that he shouldn't. Even last year for Villa where he was very good, behind a very defensive team that kept him well protected - he let in some really bad ones that went largely without criticism (let's be honest, mainly because no one really care about Villa outside of Villa). I'll be disappointed if Ramsdale doesn't have him beat there, and I think he does. And I think Ramsdale has him well beat on the distribution front as well, it's not close. And that's not because Martinez isn't good there, it's the our guy is exceptional.
Ask yourself, would you swap them tomorrow if you could? I definitely wouldn't, and I reckon even Meatwad, Martinez's biggest fan (and I honestly was not far behind him), would have to really think about it.
I was completely against the signing of Ramsdale due to past performance with Sheffield United and Bournemouth.
Fair play to the lad, he knew there was a lot of skeptics in the fan base, and he proceeded to get his head down and let his play do the talking.
Right now Martinez is still slightly ahead, but I wouldn’t swap the two.
The character Ramsdale has already shown, in relegation battles, and now turning a fan base around on his transfer just shows his personality. We need big personalities who can play under pressure, and for me he has shown that he is number one in that area.
Also, taking his age into account, he still has a lot more growing to do, and looking at his work ethic and character, I would be surprised if he does not get better over the years.
